Sports lab in Ranchi on anvil

Ranchi, June 23: Sportspersons in Jharkhand have reason to rejoice. Soon a state-of-the-art sports lab will come up in the capital, equipped to treat injuries sustained on field and during practice.

The sports lab, a brainchild of arts, culture, sports and youth affairs minister and deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto, will have a team of doctors and expert medical technicians on board to conduct tests and treat athletes.

While honouring sportspersons during the State Olympics Award ceremony organised by Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) on the occasion of Olympic Day today, Mahto said our sportsmen sacrifice a lot of sweat and blood for the sake of the state and thus deserve all help when injured.

The lab will also be equipped to study an athlete and suggest the best disciplines suited for him or her according to their body structure, Mahto said. ?We will provide scientific support to our players to help them excel,? he added.

According to him, a sports university was also in the pipeline.

The awards for 2010-11 and 2011-12 were presented to sportsmen in the function. Lawn bowl player Sunil Bahadur received the Jaipal Singh Award for best player for 2010-11 while archer Vinod Swansi bagged the award for 2011-12.

World number one archer Deepika Kumari received the Peter Thangraj Award for best woman player for 2010 while national hockey captain Asunta Lakra bagged it for 2011. Deepika?s mother received the award on her behalf as the archer is away preparing for the London Olympics.

JOA president R.K. Anand said the state has tremendous potential in terms of talent and infrastructure. But even after the national games, the equipment were not being looked after.

Earlier in the morning, a run was organised from Albert Ekka Chowk to Birsa Munda stadium at Morabadi.
