My friends tell me that I hiccup like a frog, and it drives them crazy; I say, it?s not my fault as I?ve tried everything: drinking water out of a glass leaning forward, holding my breath, the list goes on ? now I?ve simply accepted the fact that hiccups are a natural occurrence, and besides, everyone gets them.?For 13-year-old Mallory Kievman?from Manchester, CT, some annoying hiccups in the summer of 2010 sent her searching for some solutions?
When I first learned that Mallory created a way to cure hiccups, I couldn?t believe it! Turns out that Mallory actually isn?t ready to make such a big claim, but she could well be on her way to a cure.
It all started in her kitchen, with just 3 simple ingredients: sugar, water and apple cider vinegar. During her days of experimentation, these three things offered Mallory the most relief from her own hiccups. She decided to combine these ingredients to create lollipops that she calls Hiccupops. And there you have it, a quick and tasty halt to your hiccups.
But it?s more complex than that, and young Mallory is onto something that both academics and doctors are thoroughly impressed with. Jessica Bruder with the New York Times interviewed Mallory to get the full scoop on how the lollipop works: ?It triggers a set of nerves in your throat and mouth that are responsible for the hiccup reflex arc,? Mallory said confidently. ?It basically over-stimulates those nerves and cancels out the message to hiccup.? All I can say is?that?s awesome!
Mallory bravely entered her product into an annual competition at the Connecticut Invention Convention last spring and met Danny Briere, a serial entrepreneur and the founder of Startup Connecticut, which fosters new companies, including Hiccupops. He was impressed with how her product solves such a basic human need.
More recently, Mallory received the opportunity to meet with graduate students from the University of Connecticut to devise a strategy to get Hiccupops on store shelves and in the hands of hiccup-sufferers. The students have agreed to spend the summer planning a better manufacturing strategy for the product.
For now, since Mallory isn?t authorized to market her product as a cure for hiccups, the FDA has suggested she sell Hiccupops as a form of candy. It?s a great idea, and I bet that anyone with a sweet tooth will give it a shot; I?d certainly like to try it!
At 13 the most I experimented with was making my own lunch, which didn?t happen as frequently as I think my mom had hoped for, but for Mallory, experimenting is just the beginning. She is an example of someone with heartfelt determination, confidence, creativity and best of all?a knack for something we can all have a taste of ? and that?s something to be proud of at any age.
