Sherri Shepherd on Fighting Type 2 Diabetes: 'I Promise That I'll ...

By Helen James:: EEW Magazine Health & Fitness

There is nothing fun about facing diabetes, but fighting it, well, ABC?s The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, promises to make it a hoot!

?Moms and dads, don't do nothing just because it?s scary,? she tweeted. ?I wrote this book for you and I promise that I'll make it fun!?

Her new book, Plan D: How To Lose Weight And Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don?t Have It), which releases Tuesday, April 30, was written from personal experience.

In 2007, the Christian wife, mom, actress, comedian, and television host was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at age 41?something she took as the wake-up call she needed to change her lifestyle and improve her health.

For years, Shepherd, just like millions of other women, was told that she was pre-diabetic, but ignored her doctor?s advice to lose weight and get healthy before she developed full blown diabetes.

When she got the official diagnosis of the same disease that took her mother?s life, Shepherd was terrified.

"At the time, it was just like a death sentence," she said in an interview with ABC 36 Health Reporter Kristi Runyon.

"I thought, oh my gosh! I'm gonna get my foot cut off. I'm gonna die. My son was 2 years old at the time and I realized, if I wanted to be around for my son... I needed to make a change in my eating. I needed to start exercising, because I didn't want to die."

Statistics show 1 in 4 black women older than 55 already have diabetes. Also, African Americans have high rates of at least two of diabetes' most serious complications: amputation and kidney failure.

But Shepherd was determined not to let diabetes beat her. She vowed to amend her ways so her son Jeffrey wouldn?t be left alone, without a mother, as she had been.

With the help of her doctor, she created a program, lost more than 40 pounds, and feels better. Today, her diabetes is under control and she wants to share her strategies with others.

Plan D is designed to help readers lose weight safely, make exercise a consistent part of life, and control sugar sensitivity, while giving advice, encouragement, and a healthy dose of humor.
