3 Mistakes Mistake That Can Ruin a Home-Based Business - Sbabzy

The best way to enjoy work flexibility is to launch a business from home. This is the type of work life balance that everyone craves for. However, home-based business comes with its own peculiarities, says an expert in entrepreneurship and technology. In order to continue an upward trend with your home-based business, there are 5 mistakes you must always avoid.

3 Mistakes Mistake That Can Ruin a Home-Based Business

[Related feature: Ten Ways to Protect your Home Based Business]

Mistake #1: Not Networking with Other Entrepreneurs

Home-based business can lure you into an isolated lifestyle, especially if you are already prone to isolation. There?s no way you can get to know about the latest trends in the home-based business niche if you do not network with other people in your niche and industry. Also, staying in isolation when carrying on your home-based business would prevent you from learning about the newest profitable home-based ventures and improved ways of carrying on a home-based business more profitably.

Mistake #2: Not Separating Work Hours From Non Work Hours

If you operate your business from home, there are lots of distractions that can hinder you from achieving optimal performance. This is why you need a strict work-schedule that would help you separate working hours from non-working hours. If not, your neighbor would possibly drop off her toddler with you to go do some shopping. This and similar distractions may eventually become a regular occurrence if you do not draw out a strict work schedule from day-one and stick to it.

Mistake #3: Failing to Create a Work Section in Your Home

Creating a work space or section for your work-from-home business comes with great benefits. First, it creates a sense of work and makes you realize you are just like someone with a white collar in a conventional office working conscientiously to achieve targets. Also, this will prevent distractions from kids, home gadgets (e.g. TV) and other stuffs that would want to compete with your attention to your home-based business.

Tech Review: iTunes Movie Rentals (Win XP) | Morgan on Media

When it comes to digital movie software, I?ve reviewed several of the major packages by now. Flixster, VUDU, CinemaNow (twice), and Amazon Unbox have all been examined (check the Tech Reviews category if interested in any of the reviews). But anybody who knows anything about digital content delivery knows that there?s another major player to look at: iTunes, produced by Apple, who virtually started the whole ?digital content? marketplace with music.

For the purpose of this review, I will solely be looking at renting and playing movies through iTunes. Also, as usual, I am working with the Windows XP version of the software. This may be pertinent in this case.

Apple seems to prefer an insular approach to content providing. Everything about the movie rental process takes place within the iTunes app itself, including shopping for the movie. Rental prices are generally comparable to those of competing services ($2.99 for SD, $3.99 for HD). The rental periods are also comparable: Videos have a 30-day availability window once rented, and when you start playback, this begins a 24-hour viewing window. At the end of either window, the video expires. Conveniently, the next time you log into iTunes after expiration, the file will be deleted automatically after a notification.

Also convenient is that iTunes goes against the grain in accepting Paypal as a payment method; it?s the first service I?ve found which does so. What?s more, if my rental experience is consistent with the norm, merely selecting a movie for rental and downloading doesn?t trigger the charge ? I was only charged once I actually started playback (which in this case happened a few days later, so it was easy to observe the difference.)

The file is downloaded to your computer to a location that you can determine in the program preferences. It?s in a proprietary format, as far as I observed; Apple, like Amazon, does not appear to be hopping aboard the UltraViolet compatibility train just yet.

Playback, like rental, occurs within the iTunes application. When playing a video, there are a couple conveniences. First is that the video comes with a chapter index, so you can skip around if you wish. And secondly, the video also has optional closed captioning. And, of course, it has the usual pause button, which isn?t so much a convenience as an essential.

Unfortunately, that is where the convenience ends. The player also features fast forward and rewind buttons, which would be convenient if not for the fact that they appear to be completely inert. I was unable to get them to function at any point during my viewing. That, however, would be a minor nuisance at worst.

What is not a minor thing is the video playback. Several times during playback, the video would freeze and the sound would loop; it would remain so until I used the Task Manager to terminate the window. These freezes would happen anywhere from 10 seconds to 15 minutes apart, and in all numbered somewhere north of two dozen for a 110 minute movie. For the record, iTunes was the only application I had running during this rental. Additionally, I have not experienced this situation with any other form of video software, whether movie rental or simple playback, including Apple?s own QuickTime. I did eventually make it through the film, but it was an aggravating ordeal.

This is where it might be relevant that I am running Windows XP. I am of course aware that XP is considered outmoded nowadays; it has, after all, been followed up by Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. And considering that Windows as a whole is a competing platform to Apple?s own Mac OS, Apple would be entirely justified if they didn?t make software for Windows at all, let alone for older versions of Windows. If Apple had simply said ?Sorry, no XP version available?, I would have shrugged and moved on. But when a company makes software for my system, I expect that software to work. iTunes does not.

This is particularly galling considering the company in question. Apple is not, by any means, a small fly-by-night operation. They?re the second-most powerful software company around, and as Microsoft does not (as far as I know) offer their own video rental service, that makes Apple the largest in this particular game. There?s no excuse for them not being able to do this right.

I have done some searching online, and it appears this is not an isolated issue (and it seems some of the sufferers have newer operating systems). Some of the Apple forums have suggested various fixes, but I feel this is largely academic from my standpoint (and not just because having various solutions implies that most solutions won?t work). The fix for this problem may be easy, difficult, or nonexistent. But even if the fix is easy, it is still far easier for me to simply use a competing service that already works properly. And that is what I will be doing with future rentals. I spend enough of my time fixing computers as it is; I am not going to hijack my entertainment time in order to do so when I can just give my money to someone else instead of Apple.

Church remembers Bristol Township mom, sons, who were killed in crash

If one were to summarize the final chapter of the Tisdale family, it would be a tale about dreams so close to being realized before tragedy struck.

The Bristol Township family was fractured forever Friday when their vehicle collided with a tractor trailer allegedly making an illegal U-turn on Route 1 in Lawrence Township, N.J.

Killed were Jamella Tisdale and her sons, 3-month-old Jaden Tisdale and 9-year-old Jaevon Durante. The infant?s father, Shaqwan, and Jamella?s 8-year-old daughter, Mellady Durante, survived but were hospitalized.

On Sunday, the family was remembered at Spotlight Deliverance Temple in Bristol, where the Tisdales regularly worshiped.

?Shaqwan was just coming out with a CD and he was headed to a church in Trenton for a CD release service,? said fellow congregant Vincent Washington. ?He never made it. They were a beautiful family; things were working out for them.?

Jamella Tisdale had just had her own little miracle ? the successful delivery of Jaden ? as the family was about to give up hope, said the Rev. Philip Jackson, pastor of Spotlight Deliverance Temple.

During his sermon, Jackson recalled Jamella?s heartbreaking appeal to him following a miscarriage five years ago, when she asked, ?Where is God?? But the congregation continued to pray until finally, a joyful Jamella told Jackson that she was pregnant.

?I have no answer for you? as to why all those lives were taken, Jackson told his congregation. ?I know we have to accept what God allows. We have to trust in the Lord. But this is the time for all of our families to embrace one another.?

Several worshipers bowed their heads in sorrow, but, in a demonstration of hope, also stood and raised arms, and rejoiced in what Bishop Frank T. Stephens Sr. called the presence of God.

?We remember that Jesus wept when Lazarus died. That was the human side of him. But let us continue to support one another. Let us now love as never before,? Stephens said.

He also asked his flock to continue to pray for the survivors of the accident, and to thank God for life.

Washington said that the church is planning to set up a trust fund for the family. Details on how and where to contribute will be available in the next few days.

The family lived in Bloomsdale, just around the corner from Deborah Tiller, who is also a church member.

?That family was such a blessing to us,? Tiller said.? Shaqwan loved to sing. They?d been waiting so anxiously for this new baby to be born. When I think about it, I just keep crying.?

?They are very nice. They are very respectful,? said Tiffany, a neighbor of the Tisdales who just wanted to give her first name. ?I am just so sorry for what happened. It is very sad.?

Surface Pro Price Drop - Business Insider

microsoft surface pro

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

The Surface Pro.

?

Microsoft knocked off $100 from its top-of-the-line tablet, the Surface Pro, this weekend. The hybrid tablet/PC now starts at $899 for the model with 128 GB of storage.

We first spotted the price drop on The Verge.

The news comes a few weeks after Microsoft cut the price of its cheaper Surface RT tablet, which competes with the iPad, from $500 to $350.

But that wasn't the end of Microsoft's recent Surface woes.

The company was forced to take a $900 million writedown on the Surface RT due to unsold inventory. Later, it was revealed that Microsoft's entire Surface business only generated $853 million in revenue for the company. Compare that to the $25 billion in revenue Apple brought in from its iPad business during the same period.

This could also be a sign that Microsoft is gearing up to launch a new generation of Surface tablets that run on Intel's new "Haswell" processors. Those processors are very powerful and allow incredible battery life.

Will fast-food protests spur higher minimum wage?

Terrance Wise has two jobs in Kansas City ? one at a burger joint, a second at a pizza restaurant ? but he says his paychecks aren't enough to buy shoes for his three daughters and insure his 15-year-old car. So he decided to draw attention to his plight: He walked off work in protest.

Wise was among a few thousand fast-food workers in seven cities, including New York, Chicago and Detroit, who took to the streets last week, carrying "Strike" and "Supersize Our Wages" signs in front of McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King and other restaurants. They demanded better pay, the right to unionize and a more than doubling of the federal minimum hourly wage from $7.25 to $15.

"We work hard for companies that are making millions," the 34-year-old Wise says, adding that he lost his home last year, unable to make mortgage payments despite working about 50-hour weeks at Pizza Hut and Burger King. "We're not asking for the world. We want to make enough to make a decent living. We deserve better. If they respect us and pay us and treat us right, it'll lift up the whole economy."

These one-day protests, which also took place in St. Louis, Milwaukee and Flint, Mich., come amid calls from the White House, some members of Congress and economists to raise the federal minimum wage, which was last increased in 2009. Most of the proposals, though, seek a more modest rise than those urged by fast-food workers. President Barack Obama wants to boost the hourly wage to $9. And in July, more than 100 economists signed a petition supporting a bill sponsored by a Florida congressman that would hike it to $10.50 an hour.

The restaurant industry argues that a $15 hourly wage could lead to businesses closings and fewer jobs. It also notes the cost of living varies greatly around the country and many states have higher minimum wages than the federal rate. (Eighteen states and the District of Columbia, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.)

The Employment Policies Institute, which receives some funding from the industry, ran a full-page ad last week in USA Today, warning of another potential consequence: It showed the uniform of a fast-food worker with an iPad face, saying the wage increase could result in employees being replaced with automation, such as touch-screen ordering.

So at a time when the economy is growing steadily but slowly and about 11.5 million people are unemployed ? nearly double the level before the Great Recession ? how likely is it Congress will increase the minimum wage? And have these protests done any good?

The answers depend on whom you ask.

"They're very effective," says U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. "They've brought attention to appalling conditions with workers putting in very long hours ... and not making enough money to survive. This I think is scandal. .. We believe it's essential to be paid livable wages. We know the companies can afford it. These are highly profitable businesses. It would be good not just for the family budget but for the national budget."

Ellison's caucus launched a national "Raise Up America" campaign this summer that has partnered with fast-food workers and others in low-wage industries to highlight the call for better salaries. The congressman says he's not deterred by likely resistance in the GOP-dominated House.

"Remember, things that don't look possible become possible if people advocate for them," he says, adding that in 1955 someone was probably saying "they're never going to end segregation. ... Sometimes these things catch on. I think the thing to do is keep on pushing, keep on talking. ... That's how we win."

But others are more skeptical and think if there is a winner, it's unions. The Service Employees International Union is providing financial support and staff to help train organizers for this campaign.

These protests show unions "still can appeal to and speak for workers who are on the fringes of the workforce ? the less skilled, the part-timers and the immigrant workers," Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Massachusetts, wrote in an email.

These still are hard times, people are happy to be employed and the political climate in the House is not conducive for an increase, he adds. "The demonstrations are street theater and the rehabilitation of the image of American unions, but it's not going to drive new minimum wage policy," he wrote.

Scott DeFife, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association, calls the protests a campaign "to disparage the industry," which he says operates on a tight profit margin. Doubling wages, he says, "would definitely have an impact on the creation of new jobs." He says it would be especially harmful for young people, for whom the jobless rate in some communities is already in the double digits.

Some fast food companies responded to the protests by saying they respect the rights of their workers.

And some who walked out used the media spotlight to talk openly about their financial struggles.

Kareem Sparks, a 30-year-old father of two boys, 6 and 12, was laid off in 2011 from a $17.50-an-hour city job in New York. His unemployment benefits ran out and he turned to food pantries. Five months ago, he found work at McDonald's.

"I'm grateful they gave me an opportunity to feed my family and put food on the table, but it's not enough," he says. Sparks supplements his income with a second job as a security guard, earning about $8 an hour. Together, he says, he brings home about $1,000-$1,100 every two weeks and needs food stamps to survive.

"It's horrible to know when I pick up my (McDonalds) check, it's going to be less than $200," he says. "You spend all your money in one store and go to sleep broke. It's not fair. ... Some people get their checks and don't come back to work."

The average hourly salary for fast-food workers was $9.00 in May 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average age for these workers is 29 years old; for women, it's 32, according to the bureau. The restaurant association says its own analysis of Census data found that slightly more than 25 percent of fast-food workers are heads of households.

Both sides in the fight over the minimum wage cite numerous studies to buttress their arguments about whether a raise would be harmful.

The petition signed by the economists says that for decades, research has "found that no significant effects on employment opportunities result when the minimum wage rises in reasonable increments." The economists also note that minimum-wage workers employed full time for the entire year earn $15,080, almost 20 percent below the poverty level for a family of three.

But Michael Saltsman, research director at the Employment Policies Institute, cites another study that he says found raising the minimum wage was counterproductive ? with more people losing than gaining because hours were reduced and jobs were cut.

Tessie Harrell, one of the workers in the middle of this academic debate, walked off her job in protest last week.

As a Burger King manager in Milwaukee, Harrell, 34, has to stretch her $8.25 hourly salary to support five children (a sixth lives on her own). They live in a two-bedroom apartment. Her mother helped out financially and with child care, but she has since moved to a nursing home.

"It's not like we're teens working for a pair of shoes or a cell phone," Harrell says. "We're grown adults who can't find better jobs."

She would like to see something come from the protests, a wage improvement, even if it's not $15 an hour.

"I hope it works," she says. "We're just trying to survive and build a life for our children."

Carter, six others step into ?football heaven?

CANTON, Ohio ? Forcefully and emotionally, Cris Carter summed up the 50th induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night.

The seventh and final inductee from the Class of 2013, Carter honored dozens of people in his life who were ?going into the Hall of Fame with me tonight,? as he followed Jonathan Ogden, Dave Robinson, Larry Allen, Bill Parcells, Curley Culp and Warren Sapp in being inducted.

More than 120 hall members, a record, and a crowd of 11,500 was on hand at Fawcett Stadium for the golden anniversary celebration of the shrine.

?I appreciate the process you have to go through to get to be a Hall of Famer,? Carter said. ?To be able to join these men on this stage in football heaven is the greatest day of my life.?

Carter needed six tries to make the hall even though he retired as the No. 2 career receiver behind Jerry Rice. He choked back tears as he made his speech after being presented by his son, Duron, and he spoke of his problems with alcohol while playing three years for the Eagles before being released.

He hooked on immediately with the Vikings and hooked onto nearly everything thrown his way: Carter finished his 16-season career with 1,101 catches for 13,899 yards and 130 touchdowns.

?This game gave me identity, gave me a sense of purpose,? he said.

Parcells also seemingly spoke for everyone in the Hall of Fame, and all the people gathered Saturday night.

?There?s a kinship created that lasts for the rest of your life,? he said about his experience as one of the NFL?s most successful coaches.

The only coach to take four teams to the playoffs, Parcells won Super Bowls with the New York Giants in the 1986 and 1990 seasons.

?Every organization I worked for supported me to the fullest,? Parcells said. ?Without that, you?ve got no shot.?

Parcells was coach of the year in 1986 and 1994. He asked to have his bust placed somewhere near Lawrence Taylor in the hall, ?so I can keep an eye on that sucker.?

As relaxed as if he had no one to block, Ogden became the first Baltimore Raven enshrined. The first player drafted by the franchise after it moved from Cleveland in 1996 and was renamed, Ogden was presented by the man who made that selection, fellow Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome, now Baltimore?s general manager.

A former college shot putter at UCLA, the 6-foot-9, 345-pound Ogden starred at tackle for a dozen seasons in Baltimore, winning the 2000 NFL championship.

?He is part of the foundation of this franchise, part of the reason we have two Super Bowl championships,? Newsome said.

Ogden, who was given a 2013 Super Bowl ring by the team, made the hall in his first year of eligibility. He was a six-time All-Pro, made the Pro Bowl 11 times and was the main blocker when Jamal Lewis rushed for 2,066 yards in 2003.

?Talent isn?t enough,? Ogden said. ?A lot of people have talent, they don?t always live up to it. For me it is about maximizing, striving for perfection.?

Allen, who sniffled his way through his speech, was just as dominating a blocker as Ogden. He also was the NFL?s strongest man, once bench-pressing 700 pounds, saying ?I did it naturally.?

A lead blocker for Dallas as Emmitt Smith became the NFL?s career rushing leader, Allen made six All-Pro squads and 11 Pro Bowls in his 14 seasons, the final two with San Francisco. He won the Super Bowl in the 1995 season and was voted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility,

?I just knew I had to win every play,? he said. ?That?s the reason I am here. I knew if I lost a play, I had 45 seconds to get even.?

Sapp became only the second Tampa Bay Buccaneer enshrined, 18 years after Lee Roy Selmon made it. He was elected in his first year of eligibility following 13 seasons in which he went from instant starter after being selected 12th overall in the 1995 draft to Defensive Player of the Year in 1999. That season, he had 12 1/2 sacks as the Bucs won their first division title in 18 years. For his career, Sapp had 96 1/2 sacks, extremely high for a defensive tackle.

?I sit here with the greatest among the great,? Sapp said, breaking into tears. ?We?re here, baby.?

Presented Saturday night by his 15-year-old daughter, Mercedes, Sapp made the NFL?s All-Decade squads for the 1990s and the 2000s.

Sapp paid tribute to his roots in Plymouth, Fla.

?That dirt road was something rough,? he said. ?We sure turned it into something special.?

Robinson became the 12th inductee from the vintage Packers coached by Vince Lombardi to be enshrined. Robinson was a prototype outside linebacker who could rush the quarterback, cover tight ends or running backs on pass plays, and stop the run. He made the NFL?s All-Decade team of the 1960s and won three NFL titles, including the first two Super Bowls.

?This is the biggest day of the 21st century for the Robinson family,? he said, adding that he ?lives 25 miles from here but it took me 38 years to get here.

?Now, I am immortalized.?

As is Culp, one of the game?s most dominant defensive tackles for much of his 14 pro seasons, including the 1969 season when he helped Kansas City win the NFL title.

A five-time Pro Bowler, Culp also played for Houston and Detroit, retiring in 1981, then waiting more than three decades to be enshrined Saturday as a senior nominee.

?It gives me joy and inspiration that will last the rest of my life,? Culp said. ?I am just overwhelmed by the struggles, joys and tears of those who made it here. I?m happy to join them in the Hall of Fame.?

Map locates Venice Beach, in Los Angeles; 1c x 3 inches; 46.5 mm x 76 mm;

(AP) ? The driver parked outside a hotel and surveyed the leisurely summer scene at the Venice Beach boardwalk: Hundreds of people were sitting at cafes, walking along the seashore or shopping at vendors selling jewelry or art.

Then, according to surveillance video, the man got into a large black car, steered around a vehicle barrier and accelerated mercilessly through the crowd, hitting one person after another as bystanders tried desperately to get out of the way.

Saturday's hit-and-run killed an Italian woman on her honeymoon and hurt 11 others who only a moment earlier had been enjoying an afternoon near the beach at the height of vacation season.

A couple of hours later, authorities arrested a man on suspicion of murder after he walked into a police station in neighboring Santa Monica and said he was involved.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, of Los Angeles, remained jailed Sunday on $1 million bail.

Police declined to discuss a motive but Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said there was no indication that the attack was a terrorist act or that anyone else was involved.

By the time it was over, the driver had covered about a quarter of a mile along the boardwalk before fleeing. The entire incident was over in minutes.

Witnesses reported a horrifying aftermath.

People were " stumbling around, blood dripping down their legs, looking confused not knowing what had happened, people screaming," said Louisa Hodge, who described "blocks and blocks of people just strewn across the sidewalk."

The Italian woman was identified as Alice Gruppioni, 32. Her family in Bologna told the Italian news agency LaPresse that she had been on her honeymoon after a July 20 wedding.

Gruppioni worked as a manager for the family business Sira group, which makes radiators. Her father, Valerio Gruppioni, runs the company and was formerly president of the Bologna soccer team, according to LaPresse.

The family declined to speak to The Associated Press on Sunday.

Another person was critically injured. Two others were taken to hospitals in serious condition. Eight suffered less serious injuries, police said.

According to security video and witness accounts, the driver parked next to the Cadillac Hotel and twice walked out to the boardwalk before getting into the Dodge Avenger. He carefully maneuvered between a storefront and metal poles that had been erected to prevent anyone from driving onto the boardwalk.

Then he stepped on the accelerator and plunged into the crowd.

"I heard a big 'boom, boom,' like the sound of someone going up and down the curb, it was super loud," said Alex Hagan, who was working the desk at the hotel.

The driver knocked over two mannequins and an ATM and started hitting people, swerving from side to side and often running straight into victims. Video showed the car struck at least three vendors ? a fortune teller, a couple selling jewelry and a woman who does tattooing.

Two women who appeared to be in their 60s were also hit. Many people ran after the car, screaming and cursing as it sped away, Hagan said.

Golestan Alipour was bartending at Candle Cafe & Grill when the menacing vehicle drew near.

"The restaurant was full. Everybody ran," Alipour said.

It was not immediately clear how fast the car was going.

The driver eventually turned up a side street and headed away from the ocean. The car was later found abandoned less than two miles away, police said.

At the scene, detectives searched for evidence across the boardwalk, which is in a part of Los Angeles known for eccentricities. The 1.5-mile ribbon of asphalt ? which runs along the sand a few hundred yards from the ocean ? is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach. It can draw as many as 150,000 people on summer weekends.

Hodge said she and her friend, Ashley Taylor, had noted the large number of people walking along the seaside.

"It was a really nice day. There were tons of people out. In fact, we were talking about how packed it was, because we were having a hard time getting through all the people," Hodge said.

The two women stopped to buy ice cream and a couple of hats, which may have saved their lives. They stepped out of a store as emergency crews arrived.

Hodge saw a man and woman lying next to each other, wearing head braces, barely able to move but grasping hands.

Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin said there have been previous problems with motorists accidentally driving onto the boardwalk, especially during the evening, because many entrances aren't blocked and there are no signs warning them about entering a pedestrian area.

However, four yellow metal poles blocked the roadway used by the hit-and-run driver, who squeezed past the barrier by driving onto a sidewalk, authorities said.

"The frightening part," Bonin said, was that this part of the boardwalk was "one of the more protected streets."

The crash was not far from where an elderly driver sped through an open-air farmer's market in Santa Monica in 2003, killing 10 people and injuring more than 70 others.

Investigators said George Weller, who was 86 at the time, mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake and then panicked. He was doing up to 60 mph when he plowed through the market. Weller was convicted of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and was sentenced to probation.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee calls it the "most serious threat I've seen in a number of years."

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia is describing "the chatter" detected by U.S. intelligence agencies that led the Obama administration to order the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world, and issue a global travel warning to Americans.

Chambliss tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that "there's an awful lot of chatter out there" and he says it's "very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11."

He says it's critical that "we do the right kind of planning."

Facebook stock closes above $38 IPO price for the first time

Facebook's resurgent stock has closed above its IPO price for the first time since the online social networking leader made its debut on Wall Street more than 14 months ago.

The shares gained 56 cents to finish Friday's session at $38.05. That's the stock's highest closing price since ending its first day of trading at $38.23 in May of last year.

Facebook Inc. priced its initial public offering at $38 per share amid lofty expectations that investors would be clamoring to buy a stake in one of the world's best-known websites. Instead, trading glitches marred the company's stock market debut and then worries about Facebook's growth prospects triggered a sell-off that dropped the stock as low as $17.55.

The stock began soaring last week when Facebook reported better second-quarter earnings than analysts anticipated. The report for the three months ended in June showed that the Menlo Park, Calif., company is selling more ads on smartphones and tablet computers, allaying fears that Facebook wouldn't be able to make money off the growing number of its more than 1.1 billion members who regularly check into the social network on mobile devices.

More than 40 percent of Facebook's ad revenue flowed from mobile devices in the second quarter, up from 30 percent during the first three months of the year.

The accelerating growth on mobile devices is the main reason that Facebook's stock has jumped 44 percent since it announced quarterly results on July 24.

Wildlife Sound Archivist Remembered

Twenty years ago Saturday, Ted Parker, one of the world's greatest field biologists and sound archivists, died in a plane crash. He made nearly 11,000 wildlife recordings, and could identify some 4,000 different bird species by just the sound of their vocalizations. In this audio montage from Cornell Lab of Ornithology, director John Fitzpatrick offers a remembrance.

LINDA WERTHEIMER, HOST:

Twenty years ago today, Ted Parker, one of the world's great ornithologists and sound recordists died in a plane crash in Equator. He was only 40. Parker contributed nearly 11,000 wildlife recordings to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Macaulay library.

He could identify some 4,000 different bird species by sound alone. In this audio montage, the lab's director, John Fitzpatrick offers a remembrance.

JOHN FITZPATRICK: I've rarely met anybody as passionate about his love of nature and of birds than Ted Parker.

(SOUNDBITE OF BIRDS AND MAN SPEAKING)

TED PARKER: A great flock up here. I don't know if you can see all these things moving.

FITZPATRICK: He became extraordinary at being able to hear and pick out birds far away, much more acutely than most of us mere mortals can do.

PARKER: Must do about 18 species from this tree here above us right now.

FITZPATRICK: He began learning things about South American birds that nobody knew, and he could compare different species.

PARKER: Within the flock there's a small group of species, maybe half a dozen or so that spend all their lives together and move through an area maybe five or six acres in the forest. Another 20 or more species will follow them. There's obviously safety in numbers. The more eyes you have looking for predators, the greater your chances of surviving.

FITZPATRICK: He did not have an advanced degree. He didn't have time to go to school, basically is how he put it. He was out exploring, he was out learning, he was talking with people, actually getting meetings with government officials and even heads of state about the importance of considering the natural areas on the eastern slopes of the Andes.

Most importantly, he got into bird sound and he began recording birdcalls.

PARKER: Most of the experience for me has always been auditory. It's more than 50 percent of everything that's happening in a forest, and so I like to try to excite other people and turn other people on to all the sounds.

FITZPATRICK: The body of work that Ted accumulated, the collections of bird songs and calls from across the American tropics is a tremendous addition to the entire field of ornithology. And mourning his loss and celebrating his life made each one of us say to each other we're going to have to work twice as hard now to be able to accomplish what we think we can do in conservation because Ted's not there.

WERTHEIMER: John Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology remembering Ted Parker. You can find a link to download Parker's voices of the Peruvian Rainforest on our Facebook page, NPR Weekend. That audio montage was produced by Bill McQuay. This is NPR News.

Legionnaires' outbreak hits Ohio retirement center

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Health officials say Ohio's largest outbreak of Legionnaires' disease has killed five people and sickened 39 others at a retirement community since July.

The state Health Department says the outbreak at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community in Reynoldsburg in central Ohio has been linked to bacteria in an air conditioning cooling tower and several water sources.

Victims range in age from 63 to 99. About 200 people live at the center.

Legionnaires' disease isn't contagious. The rare form of pneumonia is contracted when people breathe in tiny droplets of contaminated water.

The retirement community has taken steps to clean the water by hyper-chlorinating and superheating it. The center is also installing filters on shower heads and advising residents not to drink the water until testing is completed.

Health officials believe those steps have prevented any new infections.

China rules out leaders' summit with Japan: state media

Beijing has ruled out any imminent leaders' summit with Tokyo, Chinese state-run media said Tuesday after a Japanese official raised the possibility, in a rebuff underscoring tensions over a long-running maritime dispute.

Asia's two largest economies are locked in a bitter row over a string of islands in the resource-rich East China Sea, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.

Isao Iijima, a close adviser to Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said on Sunday after a visit to Beijing that a high-level summit "will be held in the not-so-distant future". A day earlier, Abe also said he would like to hold such talks.

But an unnamed official told the China Daily: "What Iijima told reporters on Sunday is not true and is fabricated, based on the needs of Japan's domestic politics."

The official added that Iijima had not met any Chinese government officials, nor did either side discuss a leaders' meeting.

"Beijing (has) ruled out the possibility of an upcoming leaders' summit with Tokyo," the China Daily said.

Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in an online statement that "as far as I know", Iijima "has not engaged in any official activity in China, nor have officials of the Chinese government made contact with him".

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida did not directly address the China Daily report at a regular briefing in Tokyo on Tuesday, but said he hoped a visit to China by his deputy this week would pave the way for talks.

"It is important to hold a summit meeting. We hope the visit will lead to such a dialogue," he said.

Diplomatic ties between the two have frayed since last September when Japan nationalised some of the islands, triggering street protests across China.

Tokyo controls the islands, but official Chinese ships regularly patrol the waters nearby -- believed to be potentially rich in petroleum deposits -- raising concerns over a possible confrontation.

The two countries are major trading partners, but have festering disagreements over Japan's imperial past and its invasion and occupation of parts of China.

Possible tornado causes damage in Montana town

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Strong thunderstorms that moved across Montana left a trail of damage to crops and buildings along with downed trees and power outages.

The worst damage from Thursday's storm may have occurred in Gallatin County, where winds gusting up to 89 mph devastated wheat and barley crops that likely would have been harvested next week, Montana Grain Growers Vice President Matt Flikkema said.

"I've never seen crop damage to the extent we have here in the valley," Flikkema said Friday. "There are very little crops that will be harvested out of the area."

Flikkema said the damage could approach $50 million, even without taking into consideration what happened to 5,000 acres of potatoes.

Most of the grain crops are used for seed, meaning there could be a shortage of seed to plant next year, he said.

The storm started in southwestern Montana, where wind gusts up to 104 mph were recorded in Polaris, northwest of Dillon, causing major damage to homes and some trees, the National Weather Service reported.

Betty Barnes of Polaris said she lost several trees, including a big one that fell near her driveway.

"I said to myself, `Well, thanks, God, for the firewood and for protecting my house,'" Barnes told The Montana Standard.

Strong winds and possibly a tornado caused severe damage in Twin Bridges, uprooting trees and blowing the roof off at least one building.

A weather service representative was expected to visit Twin Bridges on Friday to determine if a tornado had touched down, said Steve DiGiovanna of Madison County Disaster and Emergency Services.

Some falling trees damaged historic buildings, including the museum, and the roof was ripped off a veterinary clinic outside of Twin Bridges. An airport hangar was destroyed, a travel trailer was crushed by falling trees, and a grandstand at the Madison County Fairgrounds was flipped over and destroyed, he said.

Twin Bridges Mayor Tom Hyndman said the wind also uprooted a large spruce tree that is decorated every year for the town's Christmas Stroll.

Golf-ball sized hail fell across much of Belgrade and the northern part of Bozeman, the weather service reported.

NWS meteorologist Todd Chambers of Billings said the storm began in the southwestern part of the state Thursday afternoon and moved east, causing damage as far away as Billings.

The "long-lived, long-path" storm was unusual for this time of year, he said.

In eastern Montana, a funnel cloud was reported near Acton, northwest of Billings, where at least four mobile homes were destroyed and at least three more were damaged by apparent straight-line winds gusting up to 90 mph.

The Billings Gazette reports the wind picked up two of the trailers in a trailer park, with one of them being tossed into a neighboring trailer.

Duane Cowdin lost his garage to the storm, which he said scattered debris "from hell to breakfast."

Cowdin said a neighbor's horse was spooked by the storm, got tangled in barbed wire and had to be put down because its leg was so badly damaged.

There was another unconfirmed report of a tornado in Broadview, Chambers said.

Golf-ball-sized hail was reported in parts of Billings, as well. A tree on the West End caught fire after being struck by lightning.

The storm knocked out power along its path and crews were still working Friday morning to restore service.

A second set of storms moved through the Helena. Over an inch of rain fell in a swath, moving northeast from an area near the city through eastern Chouteau County, the weather service said.

Mike James Ready For Expected NBA Opportunity

After a resurgent campaign, free agent guard Mike James has been elevating his fitness and has received interest out of a few NBA teams, staying confident about signing with a franchise ahead of training camp for his 12th season.

?The expectation is he will sign, he deserves it and so we will see how it shakes out,? James? agent, Bernie Lee, told RealGM. ?Mike simply wants an opportunity like everyone else to prove his worth. One thing Mike has shown over the last few years is he has nothing to hide and he will play for opportunities.?

James averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 assists a season ago in 45 games for the Dallas Mavericks, showing remarkable resilience in prolonging a career born out of going undrafted in 1998. In each of the past two years, James hasn't signed with a team before the season ? only to latch onto one and make a strong impact.

The Mavericks expressed interest in James on the first day of free agency and discussions with the organization are ongoing. Dallas went 16-7 in the games James started last season. Down to his weight as a rookie, James believes he can play a significant role or help mentor younger guards.

?Every time Mike has been asked to show something over the last two years, he?s stepped up,? Lee said. ?When given the opportunity, he will do so again.?

James, 38, has averaged 10 points and 3.5 assists in his career, cementing himself early as a sharpshooter before sharpening his playmaking skills to become a more natural point guard.

'Pacific Rim' $9 million China opener is bigger than 'Harry Potter'

By Todd Cunningham

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" posted a record-breaking $9 million opening in China on Wednesday, the biggest first-day ever in the republic for Warner Bros.

That's even ahead of the $7 million taken in by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" in 2011.

A strong showing in China and overseas in general is critical if the Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.' giant robots-and-monsters epic is to recoup its $180 million production budget, since it is struggling to hit $100 million domestically with $86 million after three weeks.

Overseas has been a different story, however. "Pacific Rim" has taken in more than $140 million so far and could go as high as $300 million. It is opening in Spain and Japan as well as China this weekend, and in Brazil on August 9.

Any hope for a sequel likely hinge on its international performance, as well.

Matt Damon Drums Up Russian Business for 'Elysium' With Sony Skypecast

MOSCOW ??Matt Damon took to Skype Thursday night Moscow time to talk up Sony's next summer tentpole, Neill Blomkamp's futuristic sci-fi thriller Elysium, set to be released in Russia on Aug. 8.

Damon fielded questions from Russian and international Skype callers from Los Angeles, with translations shown in a separate window during the 25-minute videocast.

The session had technical issues, including constant background music that was irritating at times.

PHOTOS: 26 of Summer's Most Anticipated Movies

Dubbing the Skypecast a "unique" experience, the actor spoke of his respect for the director's vision. In the movie, Damon plays a 22nd century Earth-bound factory worker on a mission to break into a luxury spacecraft where the planet's coddled elite live far above the poverty-stricken crowds below.

"I choose my films based on who the director is," he told a caller from a Russian television channel.

"Film really is a director's medium and so much hangs on that. I shall take almost any role if I believe in the director."

Blomkamp's vision of the future was a thoroughly developed one, where he knew everything about the world in which the movie is set, Damon said, adding that after seeing Blomkamp's first feature,?District 9,?he was very keen to work with the director and was "thrilled that [Elysium] came my way."

STORY: Matt Damon Hopes 'Elysium' Pays Off for Sony

Responding to a caller from Chelyabinsk -- the Urals city above which a comet exploded in February -- he praised Blomkamp's total commitment.

"One of the most interesting things I learned watching Neill working is that to make a really good sci-fi movie you need a director who has a complete vision of a world," Damon said. "It reminded me of James Cameron before he made?Avatar; ask him any question about that world and he could answer it. As far as he was concerned, it existed."

Blomkamp had the same belief and gave Damon books about the weapon and vehicle systems he had devised for the film.

"If I do sci-fi in the future, it's got to be with one of these visionary directors -- otherwise there's no point in doing it."

REVIEW: Elysium

In what may be perceived as a nod to Sony's dismal summer blockbuster record, with disappointing performances from After Earth and White House Down, Damon added that although the movie had big themes that he felt "resonated" with issues of importance in the world today, it was not "meant to hit anybody over the head."

"The movie is entertaining; we've made a big summer action movie. But a good movie needs to have some soul, something beneath it, otherwise you are just looking at pretty pictures," he said.

Pray For Boston Anne Frank What Happened In Boston gold price defiance Ny Post Boston Bombing 2013

This week's big questions: Has the Edinburgh Fringe grown too big? Has Twitter gone too far?

There are more places to eat. Seriously, it?s pop-up this and noodle that and I?ve already spotted a bratwurst van near my venue ? I do love sauerkraut. I used to come up to Edinburgh and guarantee losing a stone: fear and cigarettes for a month is a really effective diet. Now that I have given up the fags and am consequently very greedy, I will have to keep an eye on my sausage consumption. There are also loads more gyms and health clubs, unfortunately. I liked it when Edinburgh thought gyms were a bit sissy.

Is the Edinburgh Fringe too big? Would it not better for so much talent to be spread about the calendar and the country?

This city is the ideal size for a festival, but I do fear it?s getting borderline obese. The fringe brochure is bewildering and I?ve been saying for years that the festival needs trained Fringe ?Buddies? on hand to guide confused punters through the maze. These could be out-of-work performers which would add a nice touch of bitterness to the scheme. You?ve got to get organised, plan your route, carry a banana with you, and remember while it might be pissing down outside, your venue is likely to be sauna hot. If you need to strip down to your bra, make sure it?s a pleasant one.

You seem to enjoy Twitter but its dark side is coming to the fore. Why is that?

Argh, how sad that the playground should occasionally turn into a cesspit. I?ve been moderately lucky ? a few ?you?re shit? comments but, on the whole, much laughter, loads of information and lots of friends. The downside of social networking is that horrible people can hide behind fictional identities. The reality of most trolls is that they are socially incompetent, but that doesn?t necessarily mean they are harmless.

How best to respond to trolling?

Block, block, block. Occasionally, I will get a snide comment and if I react, the comment will be removed or I?ll get an apology. Twitter is very open to misinterpretation, especially when no one bothers with grammar. I?ve taken offence on a few occasions, because I?m prickly and I?ve read something the wrong way. Thing is, you?ve got 140 characters, so if you?ve made a boo-boo you?ve always got enough space to say sorry.

As a northerner what do you make of a Tory peer describing the North-east as ?desolate? and suitable for fracking?

Typical nimbyism. I?m scared of fracking. This country is too small to risk it. My parents live up in Lytham St Anne?s near Blackpool, which was fracked a few years ago ? and subsequently had a small earthquake. You can call it a tremor if you like, but the earth moved and it wasn?t good for me. I always think of the earth?s crust as being a bit biscuity. Fracking is like drilling into a massive Ryvita: bits are going to start breaking off. It?ll all end in tears and crumbs.

David Cameron has laid down Facebook rules for his children. Should parents monitor their children?s use of Facebook?

How? I?ve never had to stop my daughter doing anything. They have to develop their own moral code. That said, she barred me from Facebook about 10 years ago, because she said I?d use it to snoop on her. Weirdly, I obeyed! Doesn?t mean I haven?t used other snooping methods, but I think (from what I can gather) Facebook puts kids under horrible pressure to be seen to be having ?fun?. I think the most important thing we can instil into our kids is that ?fun? isn?t all that it?s cracked up to be. Sometimes ?fun? is really exhausting and boring. I try to avoid it as much as possible.

A quarter of parents are said to be hiring a tutor for their children over the summer holidays. What do you make of that?

Great work for graduates! I see it from the POV of being the parent of a 24-year-old; there?s not much out there for tons of bright post-uni kids. There?s always the hope a good tutor will inspire where a dull teacher won?t, but it shouldn?t be necessary. What?s weird is that it tends to be parents who have already opted into the fee-paying system who are forking out for tutors on top of school fees! That?s like volunteering to pay twice for the same thing, which is a bit mad.

The Olympic Games and the Diamond Jubilee have, we are told, made Britain a happier place. Was that the effect they had on you?

Yes, it?s good to be reminded that we are stylish and plucky. My natural inclination is to sneer at everything, but both occasions proved just how brilliant we are at putting on a show and how cool we are even when we?re doing something madly traditional. I thought the river procession would leave me completely cold, but fortunately on the day I was invited into a set of barristers? chambers overlooking the Thames ? so I was kept completely warm, dry and stoked up on chicken thighs.

LeBron James reportedly weighing bid to become NBA union president

LeBron James is mulling a run for president?of the NBA's players union.

The Miami Heat star is considering whether to pursue the position previously held by Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher, FoxSports.com's Jason Whitlock reported Wednesday.

?It?s something he has talked about with a small group of people,? a source close to James told Whitlock. ?He was very vocal at the meeting during the All-Star Weekend about the need for the union to dramatically change. There is a new executive director coming in and new commissioner (Adam Silver). He recognizes that this is the time for the union to change.?

Whitlock's source said that he thinks it's ?unlikely? James will bid for the job, however.

?LeBron doesn?t do anything halfway and he has serious concerns about whether he has the time he knows the job requires,? Whitlock quoted the source as saying. ?The demands on LeBron?s time are already substantial. Whether it?s formally or informally, LeBron has strong opinions on the future of the union and will be very active in the rebuilding process.?

The players could elect a new union president as early as late August at the union's summer meeting in Las Vegas, Whitlock reported.

Kellogg's profit rises but revenue falls short

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) ? Kellogg Co. says its profit rose in the latest quarter but its revenue fell short of Wall Street expectations as sales in its breakfast business declined.

The company, which makes Frosted Flakes, Pop Tarts and Eggo waffles, says North American sales rose, helped by its snacks and specialty foods. But the morning foods unit saw a 3.3 percent decline, even as the company tried to get Americans to eat more cereal.

For the quarter, Kellogg earned $352 million, or 96 cents per share. That compares with $324 million, or 90 cents per share, a year ago.

Not including one-time items, it earned $1 per share, more than the 98 cents per share analysts expected.

Revenue rose to $3.71 billion, short of the $3.8 billion Wall Street forecast.
