Scars ? Not Necessarily There To Stay! | Gnet Health and Fitness

Maybe you suffered bad acne in your troublesome teenage years, or perhaps you underwent minor surgery at some point. You might have been a daredevil or tomboy, having enjoyed all kinds of risky adventures in your youth ? and not always without consequence! In any case, you will probably have noted that life tends to leave its mark, with small (or more sizeable) scars serving to remind us of chapters already lived. Many of us have scars on different areas of the body such as our arms, legs and faces. It?s such a shame when the features we are more proud of, like a cute infectious smile, or big bright sparkly eyes are overshadowed by unsightly facial scars that we feel everyone is staring it.

Sacrificing Our Self-Esteem?

Some people may take scars in their stride, accepting them as signs that they have lived ? it is not uncommon for a man to take pride in a scar ? a sign of his masculinity and virility! But for many people, particularly the fairer sex, scars are nothing but ugly marks knocking our confidence and making us less inclined to show off otherwise beautiful features. Most are resigned to thinking there is nothing they can do, though others have been known to resort to expensive cosmetic procedures.

Whilst there may not be a miracle product that makes scars disappear altogether, ?Revitol Scar Cream? does claim to significantly reduce the appearance of all manner of unsightly scars within just weeks, including:

  1. Acne scars.
  2. Burn scars.
  3. Scars from gashes, cuts and bruises.
  4. Scars caused by surgery.

Regenerate, Renew, Remove?

Revitol Scar Cream reportedly employs an all-natural formula making it safe and easy on your skin. It comprises a blend of ingredients containing proteins and vitamins renowned for their fortifying and regenerative skin properties:

  1. Hydroquinone ? the most important ingredient, it works to lighten the skin, helping remove the dark scars. It removes the tissue that has developed a scar, as well as blemishes, age spots, wrinkles and fine lines that occur with age.
  2. Dimethylaminoethanol ? naturally promotes acetylcholine formation, which prevents skin pigmentation. It plays an important role in the prevention of skin blemishes that occur with age, and has been found to be most effective in maintaining healthy skin.
  3. Retinol ? a compound derived from Vitamin A, it is easily absorbed, penetrating the deepest layers of the skin, providing essential nutrients. It generates elastin and collagen, two vital compounds in maintaining healthy skin. It also helps ensure that skin remains toned, properly textured and coloured, as well as keeping it hydrated.
  4. Copper Peptide ? a compound celebrated for it regenerative and antioxidant properties, it encourages healthy development of skin and promotes elastin and collagen production, helping the skin regenerate after damage.

Application?

You are recommended to apply the cream twice daily, rubbing a small amount into the affected areas using a circular motion. Allow a few minutes before putting clothes over the area, ensuring that the cream is properly absorbed by the skin. Results should be readily visible within the first few weeks, though with more severe scars it can take up to four months to be completely effective.

Say Sayonara To Scars!

If you?re self-conscious about your scars, but thought there was nothing you could do, then it could well be worth giving such a highly recommended product a try. Instead of trying every which way to cover them up, why not greatly reduce the appearance of unsightly scars ? apparently even those old scars that you were convinced would be there to stay for all the years to come! Put the emphasis back on the features that you actually want people to notice!

Hawking, Higgs and Newton add Paralympic dazzle

Andy Coghlan, reporter

rexfeatures_1834880ae.jpg

(Image: Geoffrey Robinson/Rex Features)

Newton?s apple, the elusive Higgs particle discovered just weeks ago and the world?s best-known paraplegic, physicist Stephen Hawking, lit up last night?s dazzling opening ceremony for the London Paralympic Games.

Through its theme of ?enlightenment?, the ceremony drew parallels between the inspirational efforts of para-athletes to extend the boundaries of human endeavour and the endless scientific quest to extend the frontiers of human knowledge.

Hawking burst onto the stage at 8.30?pm in a blaze of colour after a celestial sphere descended into the arena then exploded in a representation of the big bang. Around 600 umbrella-wielding dancers fanned from the epicentre to represent the expansion of the early universe.

?Ever since the dawn of civilisation, people have craved for an understanding of the underlying order of the world, and why it exists at all,? said Hawking, opening the proceedings. ?Look up at the stars and not down at your feet and wonder about what makes the universe exist,? he continued. ?Be curious.?

Another central theme of the proceedings was the battle for all humans to be treated equally, whatever their individual and physical differences. This was symbolised by the arrival in the Olympic arena of a giant ?Rolodex? representing the UN?s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. ?The Paralympic Games is about transforming our perception of the world,? Hawking continued. ?We are all different - there is no such thing as a standard or run-of-the-mill human being - but we all share the same human spirit.?

Later on the ceremony paid homage to Isaac Newton?s theory of gravity. Dancers recreated the garden where he was reportedly inspired after being struck on the head by a falling apple, before a huge apple appeared in the arena. Dancers also recreated a human ?Newton?s cradle".

The celebration of Newton continued as choirs sang Principia, a new composition written for the ceremonies by Errollyn Wallen. The work was an homage to Newton?s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, his 1687 exposition of the laws of gravity.

Bringing things up to the present, the recently discovered Higgs boson also made an appearance, represented by dancers forming a pulsating phalanx of silver umbrellas. CERN got its moment in the spotlight too: towards the end of the ceremony, dancers colliding with each other at random recreated the Large Hadron Collider, where the particle was discovered just weeks ago.

?The Large Hadron Collider is the largest, most complex machine in the world, possibly in the universe,? said Hawking. ?The recent discovery of what looks like the Higgs boson will change our perception of the world, and opens the possibility of a theory of everything.?

Hawking?s theme of enlightenment was echoed by his co-master of ceremonies, actor Ian McKellen, who portrayed Shakespeare?s mystical hero Prospero from The Tempest. Prospero invited his daughter Miranda, played by disabled actress Nicola Miles-Wildin, to ?discover new worlds?, and ?shine your light on the beautiful diversity of humanity?. Echoing Hawking?s earlier injunction to ?be curious? and combat prejudice, the performance ended with Miranda urged by Prospero to ?look up and fly. Break that glass ceiling.?

"I have come here to find we are in the same group as Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

"It's a lovely group, you might call it the group of death and it will be hard, but hard work always pays.

World stocks drop amid signs eurozone in recession

PARIS (AP) ? World stock markets slid Thursday after a survey suggested the eurozone is in recession and as a modest pickup in the U.S. dashed hopes for more stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

A successful bond sale in Italy ? which eased concerns that the country's borrowing rates are spiraling out of control ? wasn't enough to buoy markets, although the euro made modest gains. The currency shared by 17 countries rose 0.1 percent to $1.2547.

In afternoon trading in Europe, Germany's DAX was down 0.8 percent to 6,952. The FTSE index of leading British shares, meanwhile, fell 0.2 percent to 5,733, and France's CAC-40 dropped 0.5 percent, to 3,3396.

Trading has been light this week as investors anticipate Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech Friday at an economic symposium that they hoped would indicate Washington is preparing more measures to jump-start the economy. But news that the American economy was picking up damped those expectations. On Wednesday, the Fed's "Beige Book" survey of economic sentiment was fairly positive and the country revised up its growth figures for the second quarter.

The American economy seems to be in an inconvenient middle spot: not growing fast enough to drive down unemployment and spur a global rally, but likely not doing poorly enough to persuade the Fed to step in again.

Ahead of the opening bell, stocks on Wall Street were trending downward. Dow futures were trading 0.2 percent lower at 13,054, while S&P 500 futures were down 0.3 percent to 1,403.50.

Europe, on the other hand, is mired in bad news. August's Economic Sentiment index fell more than expected and suggested eurozone growth could retreat 2 percent this year.

"The survey revealed falls in sentiment in the consumer, services and manufacturing sectors, confirming that the downturn is related to both domestic demand and exports," said Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist for Capital Economics. "And perhaps more worryingly, there is further evidence here of a sharp slowdown in Germany."

Earlier in Asia, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped to another three-year low on Thursday, losing 0.03 percent to 2,052.58.

Elsewhere, the Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei fell 1 percent to 8,983.78 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.2 percent to 1,906.38. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also was down 1.2 percent to 19,545.93, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.9 percent to 4,315.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan also fell.

Concerns about the economy are driving down the price of only since less growth typically means lower demand for energy. Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 17 cents to $95.32 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The Fatherhood Challenge: Developing Values, a Voice, And a Vote

First, this is not a political commentary. Rather, today we should consider our parental role in teaching and encouraging the next generation of voters in America - our children. I will suggest that the voting process begins long before our kids turn 18 years of age.

Last week there was an automated voicemail message on our home telephone, extending a ?personal? invitation to attend a Romney for President rally to hear local officials speak and see (and even to board) the touring campaign bus. I thought, what a terrific opportunity for my sons to see the political machine in process.

We went and listened to speakers, ate ?freedom cookies,? and cheered as our country?s flag was waved while triple-barreled questions incited uproarious chants of ?Yes!? After all, who wouldn?t want a better economy? Who wouldn?t want to support families? And who wouldn?t want to renew national security by not selling it out with debt for generations to come? But what impacted my kids most? At 9 and 11 years old respectively, it was getting on the bus.

I asked them what they heard during the rally. They responded, ?Romney is for families. Romney is for jobs and he has experience in business.? I followed, ?What about President Obama?? They said, ?He?s not.? They were listening after all. However, this example creates a challenge for us, parents. While our family constituency is unavoidably hammered by the over-simplified marketing clarion calls of political party affiliations and candidates, we must ask ourselves if we are doing the more fundamental job ? helping them identify their values and to develop a voice to promote and defend them.

I was raised in a politically divided household. My mother was a vocal supporter of Kennedy/Johnson, Carter, and Clinton. My father, a Navy man and career defense industry engineer, was a quiet-but-devout conservative. I suspect that because they didn?t personally agree, neither politics nor the underlying issues were discussed or taught in our home. As a result, when the privilege of voting also became my right, I felt generally disconnected and had no idea how to navigate the messaging or propositions to establish an opinion. So, with my first two opportunities to vote, I did nothing. We have to do a better job as parents, especially teaching children how to listen, discern truth (if they can find it), and indoctrinate the responsibility to exercise their voice in the political process through voting.

The ways of politics are rocking our children?s confidence in this country and in their future. Both campaigns are overwhelmingly focused on the defamation and destruction of character, capacity, and aspirations of the opposing candidates. The message is clear, ?The other guy sucks. If he wins, kiss your dreams goodbye.? Wow. Guess what? Someone IS going to win. And now as part of the political process we?ll have convinced nearly half of our united states that he is a creep. These messages are inescapable to the underage audience as well, appearing pervasively on television, on the radio, online, in social media and even in video games. This erodes national pride and any sense of security of the next generation of voters.

I do not want my sons to blindly assume my political affinity. However, I would be thrilled if they come to the same conclusions that I have, after understanding the options presented and matching those to the values that their mother and I expect they?ll learn in our home. Then they will be equipped to exercise their own voice through voting, towards their values. If they come to different conclusions, there is still victory in our raising active, engaged voters.

Challenge: Independent of your own political stance, help to get kids on the bus.?

With your child:

? Discuss your family values.

? Identify core issues that are affecting our country (and especially the family).

? Help your child understand the difference between the political process of winning an election by tearing down the opponent, and that of working towards a better America by voting in the candidate with who he or she has the greatest confidence and best reflects their values.

? Finally, we must find a way to encourage patriotism in kids independent of politics. Withholding our prayers, hopes and support from whoever wins this election (provided your desired candidate does not win) only teaches that our national pride is conditional upon one leader. It also presumes that God cannot achieve miraculous things through adversity. Both of which are not true.

God help us as parents, and God bless America.

Man if Afghan uniform kills 3 NATO troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan says three of its troops have been killed by a man in an Afghan army uniform.

The attack is the latest in a rising number of disturbing shootings this year by Afghans soldiers ? or insurgents dressed as government troops ? on the international forces training them to fight the Taliban as the international coalition withdraws.

NATO said Wednesday the latest attack came a day earlier in southern Afghanistan. It gave no other details.

Similar "insider attacks" have been rising sharply, with 34 of them so far this year. Forty-five coalition members have been killed, mostly Americans.

At least a dozen of this year's attacks have been in the past month, raising questions of a new Taliban strategy.

back to uni the empty room and all the stuff

Moving out to go to University means nothing but a ton of stuff in a very cramped room. Packing is the perfect time to purge and organize! But what do you get rid of? What do you keep? What do you do with all the memories?

Sorting: Keep, Maybe, Toss

As you are going through your things, label three large boxes KEEP, MAYBE, TOSS.

  • TOSS box should be all items you are getting rid of. Pick out items you can donate to local clothing banks, school programs, and shelters to reduce waste. Throw out the rest.
  • MAYBE box should be things you are unsure about. Go through this box again and as you do, ask yourself:
Who might enjoy this more than me?
Do I already have something else with the same memory?
  • Your KEEP box should be full of items that you wish to keep requiring appropriate storage.

Where do I Store Everything?

Here are some great organizational storage solutions:

  1. Start a photo wall. Pictures are one of the best ways to hold on to memories.
    1. Install additional storage such as bookshelves or drawers. Use boxes, baskets, and cubbies for organized storage.
    2. Take photos of some of your memories and create an album rather than keeping all of the items themselves to save space.
    3. Store things in clear plastic containers with labels. You can put them in the basement storage room, under the stairs or even in the garage.

Where do you keep your memories?

US: Helping Foster Kids Even After Adoption

Aug 28, NPR: The U.S. adoption system was largely organized around placing infants, both from this country and abroad. But, it turns out that, by far, the largest number of adoptions in the U.S. is through the foster care system. That means toddlers, young children, even teens. Yet many in the field say the system does little to help families cope with the special issues a number of these children will face, even years after adoption. Foster adoptions have nearly doubled since 1997, when a policy change gave states financial incentive to place children with permanent families. The federal government has also waged an aggressive and charming ad campaign, with TV spots reassuring people that they ?don?t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent.? Debbie Riley, head of the Center for Adoption Support and Education in Maryland, says she is seeing an increasing number of ?disruptions.? ?Families are calling and saying, ?I can?t do this,? and [they're] putting children back into [foster] care?. MI: Saginaw?s Top Catholic Bishop To Be Named in Philadelphia Clergy Sex Abuse Lawsuit

Aug 27, Saginaw News: Attorneys plan to name the leader of the Diocese of Saginaw in a lawsuit surrounding clergy sex abuse allegations at his former assignment in Philadelphia, media reports indicate. Bishop Joseph Cistone earlier this year was not named in any criminal indictments, but lawyers say Cistone and others will be named in a civil case brought on by a former Philadelphia altar boy who claimed sexual abuse in 1992. ?My best description of them is that they were the kingpins,? Slade McLaughlin, a Philadelphia attorney, told the news station when describing Cistone and another former Catholic administrator in Philadelphia. Link to Article

GA: Georgia Makes Parent Volunteers In Schools Mandatory Child Abuse Reporters. Is That A Mistake?

Aug 26, AJC.com: Schools in Georgia are now informing parents of a law passed this year that broadens the list of people mandated to report child abuse. The list now includes volunteers at churches, colleges, clubs, summer camps or soccer fields or parents who chaperone a field trip. They could go to jail if they fail to report suspected abuse. MA: Program Helps Families Create Their Own Solutions

Aug 26, Boston Globe: The Family Independence Initiative, which recruits families, urges them to identify their aspirations, and pays them $160 a month to record their progress toward achieving them. The central idea behind the initiative is that poor people have the resourcefulness to solve their own problems. That with the support ? and the watchful eyes ? of a small community of peers, they can transform their lives. The results so far have been stunning. Among the first families to join these groups two years ago, personal savings have grown a massive 264 percent. Average monthly incomes have risen 25 percent, not counting FII payments. Children?s grades have jumped 25 percent, too. Members have started businesses, bought houses, enrolled in college, begun microloan programs, gotten care for sick children, lost weight, and found community. Link to Article

US: Finding Hope after Trauma: The Remarkable Recovery of the Adolescent Brain

Aug 26, Huffington Post: A 2005 study conducted by Casey Family Programs found rates of PTSD in young people formerly in foster care to be more than twice that of U.S. war veterans.
Young people who have experienced trauma are extraordinarily resilient. Nowhere is this clearer than among the population of young people who have been in foster care. Trauma comes in all forms, and whether the trauma young people in foster care experience is defined by physical or sexual abuse, moving from place to place, being separated from siblings and other loved ones, or living in a disjointed system ? its impact can be devastating. Without access to a supportive family or network, young people in foster care ? especially those who abruptly age out of the foster care system ? don?t have the same opportunity to recover and move on. And yet, it is precisely during that window of their young lives ? between ages 14 and 25 ? that young people have the most potential for recovery and resilience. New advances in neuroscience tell us that the brain is not ?done? by age six, as previously thought. Instead, the adolescent brain continues to develop, providing a ?use it or lose it? timeframe similar to that which exists in early childhood. Even after significant trauma, the brain can indeed rewire itself ? meaning that the physiological consequences of trauma can be reversed. Systems that support young people must seize this window of opportunity. Link to Article

Young and Alone, Facing Court and Deportation

Aug 25, New York Times: Immigration courts in this South Texas border town and across the country are confronting an unexpected surge of children, some of them barely school age, who traveled here without parents and were caught as they tried to cross illegally into the United States. The youths pose troubling difficulties for American immigration courts. Unlike in criminal or family courts, in immigration court there is no right to a lawyer paid by the government for people who cannot afford one. And immigration law contains few protections specifically for minors. So even a child as young as six years old has to go before an immigration judge ? confronting a prosecutor and trying to fight deportation ? without the help of a lawyer, if one is not privately provided. US: Special Visa Program Offers Citizenship Path For Illegal Immigrant Youth In Foster Care

Aug 27, Washington Post: Two years ago, her mother was deported, her brother was detained and she was put in foster care. A powerful reminder of all she lost and gained is printed on the top right corner of her green card: ?SL6.? That?s the code for special immigrant juvenile status (SIJS), the little-known program that allows Boudet and hundreds like her each year to live and work in the U.S. as a legal permanent resident. The program has quietly helped 10,000 young illegal immigrants become legal permanent residents since 1997. More recently, much attention has been focused on President Barack Obama?s deferred action policy that allows some young illegal immigrants to avoid deportation by obtaining temporary work permits. Thousands flocked to apply for that program on the first day alone. Advocates say that the new Obama administration policy won?t directly change the juvenile visa program, and that it?s too soon to tell exactly how the visa program may be affected by the policy change. But it may make young illegal immigrants more comfortable coming forward for help staying in the U.S. That could lead to more people applying for the visa. The policy change also gives them another option if they don?t qualify for the special visa program because of key requirements to be under the age of 21, unmarried and a dependent of the state at the time of the application. ?Link to Article

US: As Thousands of Parents Are Deported, US Citizen Kids Face Fallout; Some Placed For Adoption

Aug 25, Associated Press: It?s a question thousands of other families are wrestling with as a record number of deportations means record numbers of American children being left without a parent. And it comes despite President Barack Obama?s promise that his administration would focus on removing only criminals, not breaking up families even if a parent is here illegally. Nearly 45,000 such parents were removed in the first six months of this year, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Critics say the parents are to blame for entering the country illegally in the first place, knowing they were putting their families at risk. These parents have taken a reckless gamble with their children?s future by sneaking into the country illegally, knowing they could be deported. ?Not to deport them, gives them the ultimate bonus package, and creates an incentive for others to do the same thing.? Others, including Obama, say splitting up families is wrong. A year ago, he told a Texas audience that deportation should target ?violent offenders and people convicted of crimes; not families, not folks who are just looking to scrape together an income.? And, last year ICE announced a new policy of ?prosecutorial discretion? that directs agents to consider how long someone has been in the country, their ties to communities and whether that person?s spouse or children are U.S. citizens.

In Congress, California Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard has proposed legislation that would make it more difficult for local agencies to terminate the parental rights of immigrants. She calls it ?heartbreaking ? that in the U.S., immigration status in itself has become grounds to permanently separate families.? It is, she said, ?absolutely, unquestionably inhumane and unacceptable, particularly for a country that values family and fairness so highly.? Link to Article

WI: Father Reaches Settlement with Welfare Workers in Death of Infant Son

Aug. 24, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: The father of a 5-month-old boy who was drowned by his mentally ill mother in October 2007 has settled his federal lawsuit against three child welfare workers and their employers, according to online court records. The suit, filed in federal court in Milwaukee, alleged wrongful death and a violation of the 14th Amendment. When Will Robert Johnson was just 1 month old, child welfare workers removed him from his mother?s home because they feared that her serious mental illness compromised his safety. Yet four months later, social workers left him alone with her for a visit, and he drowned in the bathtub. Two social workers and a supervisor were named as defendants. The three and their employers, which had contracted with the state, knew or should have known Will?s mother, Arkisha Johnson, had a long history of mental illness, which included threats of violence, emotional instability, multiple suicide attempts and failure to take her medication, according to the suit. In October 2010, the Child Welfare Disclosure Act was passed without opposition by state lawmakers and quickly signed by the governor. It requires the state Department of Children and Families to notify the public when a child has been killed or suffered serious injury. Link to Article

MA: Children?s Rights Chides Mass. System on Foster Care

August 24, Boston Globe: A children?s advocacy group has issued a series of scathing reports on the Massachusetts foster care system, contending that nearly 1 in 5 children in state custody for at least two years have suffered abuse or neglect. The group, called Children?s Rights, released the reports Thursday as part of a federal class-action lawsuit it brought against the state?s child welfare system in 2010. It asserts that children are mistreated at a high rate under state care, that they often bounce from one foster home to the next, and that they sometimes stay in the foster system for years. Approximately 1 in 6 who are reunited with their families return to foster care after further abuse or neglect, the group says. In several reports submitted by child welfare specialists, the group said the state?s Department of Children and Families is plagued by dysfunction, low staffing, and lax oversight. Link to Article

ID: 3-Year-Old Idaho Child Reunited With Father in Mexico

Aug 23, Miami Herald: A young girl whose custody case was ultimately decided by the Idaho Supreme Court traveled to Mexico earlier this week to begin living with a father she had never met before. Maria Ramirez, 3, flew to Mexico on Monday and was handed over to her father, Jesus Ramirez, to begin a new life with him and his family in Salamanca, a small town in central Mexico, according to officials with the Consulate of Mexico in Boise. In April, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled that a lower court erred in severing the man?s parental rights even though he had never met his daughter, initially came to the U.S. illegally and was barred from ever returning. The Idaho Department of Health and Human Services argued to have the father?s custody rights severed as the agency explored placement options for the child after officials removed the girl from the mother?s home. Mexican officials in Boise cheered the girl?s transfer to her father?s custody and the legal process that affirmed the rights of birth parents over questions of a parent?s immigration status. Link to Article? Comment by C. Enright: How can someone be reunited with a parent she had never met? This must be a very traumatic experience for this girl.

US: For Chinese-American Adoptees, Matters of Identity

Aug 23, NPR: Of the roughly 80,000 Chinese children adopted in the United States since 1979, almost all are girls, abandoned at birth by their parents because of China?s one-child policy, coupled with inheritance laws that favor boys. Waiting for them at this end was the pent-up parental longing of thousands of infertile couples, single women (and a few single men) and gay and lesbian couples. This is hardly unexplored territory, but until now most of the copious commentary on Chinese adoption has come from the parents? point of view. Now some of the girls are old enough to speak for themselves, and Linda Goldstein Knowlton, a Hollywood producer and an adoptive mother herself, picks up their story in Somewhere Between, a warm-hearted if somewhat over-orchestrated documentary that gives voice to four teenaged adoptees from loving but very different homes. It also would prohibit registered sex offenders from representing minors. Link to Article

CA: Social Workers Build Bridges to Find Homes for Foster Children Living on the Street

Aug 21, Los Angeles Times: L.A. County?s staying connected to juveniles on the street via Facebook, family ties and foot patrols and placing them when they?re ready. The Department of Children?s and Family Services doesn?t have enough famil y foster homes for parent-less adolescents. Unhappy teens who run away become wards of the Probation Department because they?re considered delinquents. The two agencies barely talk to one another, so those children languish on the streets and are often victimized by thieves, drug dealers and pimps. Four years ago, in the wake of a scandal over hundreds of unaccounted-for children the foster care agency agreed to try an unconventional approach, forming a small Runaway Outreach Unit that relies not on hauling kids in from the streets, but building trust to bring them back. ?The old way wasn?t working,? said the unit?s leader, social worker Eric Ball. Since 2008, his team ? using Facebook, family connections and foot patrols ? has located 1,500 missing youths and eased 500 into independent living and out of foster care, he said. ?The important thing is to make contact and begin to earn their trust,? Ball told me Saturday, from a crowded downtown community center, where his team had gathered hundreds of their teenage wards for a daylong conference on healthy living. ?We?re trying to empower them,? Ball said. ?Nobody likes being told what to do.? Link to Article

IN: Some Judges, Police Call Department of Child Services Child Abuse Hotline ?Frustrating,? ?Inefficient?

Aug 21: IndyStar.com: Department of Child Services officials call the agency?s centralized child abuse hotlinea ?model for other states,? ?one of the most up-to-date and effective? in the nation. The hotline?s workers in Indianapolis answer calls promptly and effectively 24 hours a day, the state officials say, delivering consistent results for children in all of the state?s 92 counties. But local officials who have been using the centralized hotline since it went into effect in 2010 paint a different picture. They use descriptions such as ?constant problem,? ?very frustrating? and ?inefficient.? ?They do not seem to understand the issues that are actually going on in the field,? a Warrick County sheriff?s detective says. A Knox City police detective is more blunt: ?Children are not getting the help they need.? Those comments are contained in responses to an informal survey conducted by Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, which he shared exclusively with The Indianapolis Star. Link to Article ?See also: Link to Courier Press Article and Link to Indiana Public Radio Article

FL: Florida Turns Down $4.9 Million from Federal Government Designed to Strengthen Parenting

August 21,Tampa Bay Times: Kimberly Dudley says she is grateful for the agency Healthy Start, which sent an educator into her home to help her get off drugs and prevent her kids from being shipped to foster care. ?If I didn?t have the program, I would be homeless with a premie,? said Dudley, 21, a Clearwater mother of two young children. Now the program is in danger. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health turned down a $4.9 million federal grant that already has helped 84 Pinellas County families and hundreds more statewide. The department was forced to turn down the money after the Florida Legislature refused to accept it. Some state lawmakers were upset because the program is connected to the Affordable Care Act, also known as ?Obamacare.? Link to Article

FL: State?s DCF Removes Child Protective Investigation Function Away from Sheriff?s Office

Aug 20, Citrus Daily: The state?s Department of Children and Families (DCF) has taken child protective investigations away from the Citrus County Sheriff?s Office. Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said the DCF?s move was totally unanticipated. ?I never saw it coming,? said Dawsy. ?I?m shocked.? The DCF has optioned to bring Citrus County?s child protective investigations (CPI) back in-house, effective as of Oct. 31. DCF?s precise reasoning is cloudy, but the state agency has said that the performance and measurable outcomes of the program under the Sheriff?s Office was never in question. The DCF exercised the exit clause in a one-year contract, signed earlier this year, to keep the program under the auspices of the Sheriff?s Office. After hearing the news, Sheriff Dawsy promised to make the transition of services as smooth as possible, although he admitted to worries about the safety of the county?s children. The Sheriff?s Office said today that the DCF?s decision in no way impacts the six other Florida sheriffs who currently perform the same CPI function. No additional info in article.

GA: Degarmo Publishes Book on Foster Parenting

Aug 20, Jackson Progress-Argus: John DeGarmo has worked as an English and drama teacher, managed a day care center, hosted various radio shows throughout both the United States and Australia, and even worked in the field of professional wrestling. He is currently serving as a media specialist at both Jasper County High and Middle schools. He recently earned his doctorate and he published his doctoral dissertation on the challenges that foster children face in public schools. ?Fostering Love: One Foster Parent?s Journey,? according to DeGarmo, was about his own personal experiences with the foster care system. It takes actual events that have taken place in his first nine years as a foster family and puts them in writing. He uses the perspective of himself as the parent and the stories form from how each experience affected him and his own children. Link to Article

GA: Court Cases Show Challenge of Prosecuting Child Abuse

Aug 18, Augusta Chronicle: The challenges of prosecuting crimes against children were on full display the past two weeks in the Augusta judicial circuit. jurors delivered a partial acquittal of Corduray Scott, who was charged with fatally squeezing and shaking his 3-month-old son, Corduray Jr., in 2010. While convinced Scott was guilty of felony murder, they cleared him of killing the boy with malice. The week before in Columbia County, jurors deadlocked after 11 hours of deliberations could not produce a verdict in the case of Lawanda Concettes Tripp, a baby sitter accused in the 2009 death of a 22-month-old toddler. Former assistant district attorney Adam King said the prosecution walks into a trial with the jury?s sympathy for a child victim. But the advantage is limited ? human nature makes it hard to believe someone could be so cold-hearted they would harm a child, King said. ?That sympathy cuts both ways,? he said. The same can be said of the scientific and medical evidence. Link to Article

Court: Michigan Court of Appeals (Unpublished)
Case Name: In re Mullins

The court held that because the trial court intended that the child should be allowed to maintain a relationship with the respondents-parents, it clearly erred in finding that termination was in the child?s best interests. Thus, the court vacated the termination order and remanded for further consideration of the best interest factors. In an order issued concurrently with its opinion, the court set a schedule for the proceedings on remand, and retained jurisdiction. In the consolidated appeals, both parents challenged the termination of their parental rights to their infant son (TM). The petitioner-DHS presented clear and convincing evidence that at least one statutory ground supported termination. However, the trial court did not properly consider TM?s placement with his paternal grandmother when deciding whether termination was in his best interests. The court noted that relative placement is relevant to the best interest analysis because the relative may be open to allowing the parent to maintain a relationship with the child, which may be in the child?s best interest even if the parent is not a fit full-time custodian. Gaming News: US Online Gambling Tax Revenue Under The Microscope

Category: Investment

NEW YORK - August 29, 2012 (www.investorideas.com newswire, www.gamingindustrystocks.com) Proponents of legalized online gambling have had two major victories this month: the first with Nevada issuing the first online poker licence, and the second with Judge Jack Weinstein ruling that poker is a game of skill.

This has sparked fresh debate over the state legalization and regulation of internet-based casino and poker games, which had already gathered momentum following the December 23rd Wire Act reversal by the Department of Justice, freeing individual states to allow online gambling.

"These are very exciting times for the online casino world," John Casey, PR director at Casino.org explained. "We are seeing a strong movement towards giving American players the choice to gamble when and where they want. This is, after all, supposed to be the land of the free."

Nevada has just stepped up to the plate and made the bold move of becoming the first US state to allow private companies to offer online poker to players within state lines. The Nevada Gaming Commission approved the state's first interactive gambling operator's license to South Point Poker LLC this August.

Then the online gambling world made another step towards regulation when Jack Weinstein, a federal judge in Brooklyn , ruled on a case involving an underground poker club. He tossed the case out, saying that poker is more of a skill game than a game of chance. Poker Players Alliance Executive Director John Pappas said in a statement that the ruling was "...a major victory for the game of poker and the millions of Americans who enjoy playing it."

"At Casino.org we agree wholeheartedly with John Pappas' statement," Mr Casey said. "Not only are the US states throwing away a great revenue opportunity by not licensing, but it also brings solid regulation into an industry that has lived in a grey area for many years."

Experts estimate that American poker players were spending over $26 billion a year before federal regulators shut down the three largest online poker operators. Now, particularly in cash-strapped states like California and Delaware , lawmakers are examining the changing environment in Nevada , and are looking into the potential tax revenues that would be gained by legalization and state regulation.

Online gambling industry analyst, Casino.org recently published this infographic, which details the potential income that would accompany a regulated online gambling scenario.

"If all 50 states were to follow Nevada's example, that the US could theoretically see an additional $80 billion a year in tax revenues enough to wipe out California 's state debt three times over," Mr Casey stated. "That money could be used to do a lot of good in America ."

According to a recent report by the Brookings Institute, US states are projected to see a nationwide deficit of over $400 billion, which will leave many of them looking for new sources of revenue. The potential income of a well-regulated system for online gambling could prove to be too lucrative to ignore.

Diabetes can be controlled in patients after pancreas removal

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Removing the entire pancreas in patients with cancer or precancerous cysts in part of the organ does not result in unmanageable diabetes -- as many physicians previously believed, research at Mayo Clinic in Florida has found. The study, published online August 26 in the journal HPB Surgery, evaluates how well patients who had their entire pancreas removed could control their resulting diabetes. The pancreas produces insulin to remove sugar from the blood, so when the organ is gone, insulin must be replaced, usually through an external pump or with injections.

The researchers examined control of insulin over several years in 14 patients whose entire pancreas was removed. They compared their findings with 100 people with type 1 diabetes, and must use insulin replacement. They found both groups had little difficulty controlling their blood sugar, and no complications resulted.

The findings should reassure physicians and surgeons that removing the entire pancreas is reasonably safe and effective, says senior investigator Michael B. Wallace, M.D., chair of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

"What has confounded surgery for pancreatic cancers and precancerous cysts for a long time is the notion that if the entire organ is removed, patients will have great difficulty in controlling the resulting diabetes," Dr. Wallace says. "Most surgeons try to leave as much of the pancreas as possible."

"What we have shown here is that, due to wonderful recent improvements in insulin therapy, patients without a pancreas can control their blood sugar as effectively as type 1 diabetes patients can," he says.

Although this study was small, Dr. Wallace says the findings are mirrored in the experiences of patients treated at Mayo Clinic in Florida with total pancreas removal.

Even though the approach of preserving as much of the pancreas as possible benefits most patients, leaving part of the pancreas in some patients may put them at risk of developing hard-to-detect cancer in the remaining organ, he says.

Similarly, patients who have a potentially precancerous cystic condition known as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm in part of the pancreas can develop the same cysts in the part of the pancreas that remains after partial removal, he says. Removing the entire pancreas eliminates the possibility of recurrence in the residual pancreas.

"Most surgeons today make difficult decisions about how much of the pancreas to remove in a patient, but that process may become a little more straightforward now that we have demonstrated patients do well when their entire pancreas is removed," Dr. Wallace says.

The study was funded by Mayo Clinic.

Charlie Sheen is Never Going Away

It's terribly sad but true: Charlie Sheen really is winning.

The actor has reason to celebrate today (hooker and cocaine-free, we hope) because FX has picked up his Anger Management sitcom for 90 additional episodes. Yes, 90.

Charlie Sheen as Charlie Goodson

The network was forced to complete the order after making an unusual agreement with Sheen and the series: if it performed well enough, FX wouldn't just order a second season comprised of 10 installments.

No, it would go all out and guarantee 90 more, which takes the total number to 100 and, in all likelihood, the series in to syndication. Which could net Sheen $100 million in all.

Why make such a deal with such a trouble star? Who the heck knows. But might have something to do with money.

Let's hope Sheen continues to use his for a good cause.

What would a football season be without TVF sharing our predictions (as ridiculous as they may be). With the season kickoff just a few hours away, the esteemed writers here at TVF have made our picks. Some of our predictions will come to fruition, most of them will not. Some of them will garner laughter. We?ll just have to watch the games and see what happens. And without further ado, here are the picks that will surely all be wrong by Halloween.

The ACC has several picks for FSU, Va Tech, and Clemson. Pretty standard predictions by any means. The real question is whether or not FSU is truly back on a national level. I say yes, having them reach the BCS Title Game (come on, that schedule is a joke). Everyone else disagrees.

The Big 10, much like the ACC, has picks scattered. Michigan State, Michigan, and Wisconsin all garnered multiple votes. And for some reason, Nebraska earned one vote (really, cbh?). Almost everyone went with the favored Sooners in the Big 12, but give extra credit to Hawkeye and JP for their completely random picks. Pac 12 and SEC picks are as close to unanimous as the group got, heavily favoring USC and Alabama. Those two teams are also picked by most of us to reach the BCS Title game. It?s worthy to note that I?m the only writer who picked a school other than USC, Bama, or LSU to win the title. Maybe I?m just that dumb.

The fun predictions! Barkley?s the heavy favorite for the Heisman. No shock there. But patphish should be heavily criticized for picking a top 10 team as ?surprisingly good.? Georgia is the popular pick to suck this season, getting 3 picks. However, I question if that?s truly a surprise. Georgia screams mediocrity, pretty much every year. All that being said, feel free to share your own predictions or mock ours in the comments.

Christie's blunt style tested in convention speech

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With a rowdy fist-pump, blunt and brash New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lit a fire Tuesday night under the Republican National Convention, labeling Democratic President Barack Obama part of the complacent status quo.

"It's been easy for our leaders to say not us, and not now, in taking on the tough issues. And we've stood silently by and let them get away with it," the first-term Republican governor said with a rock star's rasp during the keynote address. "But tonight, I say enough."

His mission was to make the case against Obama and fire up a convention delayed in its start by a tropical storm.

Like a coach before a football game, Christie implored the thousands inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum to rally behind GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

"Everybody stand up. There's no time left to waste," the outspoken former prosecutor shouted.

Judging by the thundering cheers inside the arena, Christie hit his mark. That outspoken style made him a Republican Party star and helped earn him the plum, prime-time speaking gig.

He rocketed up the GOP ranks in 2009, winning the Democratic-heavy Eastern state the year after Obama was elected and establishing a reputation as confrontational to big labor and public employees. Early in the GOP nominating campaign, Republicans uninspired by Romney aggressively urged Christie to seek the nomination.

New York delegate David Shimkin said he admired Christie's frankness. "He doesn't seem to have a filter. A lot of candidates don't do that," Shimkin said.

As keynote speaker, Christie was tasked with making the prime-time pitch for Romney, who remains something of a mystery to voters even though polls show him locked in a close contest with Obama.

Christie considered running for the nomination himself but months ago decided to endorse Romney, who made a personal entreaty for Christie's support as the GOP primaries were getting under way.

Christie on Tuesday waved off a published report that he had turned down an offer to be Romney's running mate because he didn't think Romney could win in November.

"Not only do I believe he can win, I think he will win," Christie told "CBS This Morning."

Temperamentally and stylistically the opposite of the buttoned-up Romney, Christie acknowledged in interviews that the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to close the sale with some voters, especially women.

"Mitt Romney's going to have to win this campaign. He's going to have to let the American people see who he is," Christie said on ABC's "Good Morning America," adding that Romney's choice Ryan as his running mate had brought more energy to the ticket.

After he toppled Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in 2009, national Republicans embraced Christie for his tough talk on fiscal matters and for taking on public employee unions, especially teachers. Web videos of Christie berating teachers at town hall meetings quickly went viral, giving Christie a large national audience. Critics dubbed him "Gov. YouTube," suggesting he was more interested in getting publicity for himself than for improving New Jersey's finances.

Democrats warned that viewers shouldn't buy Christie's claim of a "Jersey comeback." They pointed to economic data showing the state still grappling with weak employment and high property taxes.

"Chris Christie is taking the stage in Tampa tonight to talk about his favorite topic: himself," state Assemblyman John Wisniewski told reporters during a conference call before the speech. "Gov. Christie's record in New Jersey is certainly not a model for our nation, and the people in Tampa should know that."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a likely 2016 presidential contender, went further, saying he expected Christie to deliver an "angry, Don Rickles keynote extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, who had one of the worst job creation rates in the nation."
