Yorktown

No. 6 Yorktown defeated visiting No. 11 Mahopac 8-4 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament on Friday.?Yorktown (14-7) increased its lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning by scoring twice, with the runs being scored by Sam Wilson?and Lauren Gorstein.

Mahopac though fought back with two runs in the sixth frame and it would have been more had it not been for an amazing running catch made by Gorstein, who plays left field.

?Without a doubt that is a game-changing catch out there in left-center field," Yorktown coach John McKenna said.??She has been working hard all year long."

"She was a right fielder, we put her in left field and every day after practice if she wasn?t staying with one of the coaches, she was with another player, working on lateral movement, going after fly balls," McKenna added. "She just displays pure hustle and desire when she?s out there.?

Yorktown then fed off the momentum from Gorstein's catch by scoring three runs in its half of the sixth to increase its lead to 8-3.?Gabi Rosen led off and walked with pinch-runner Morgan Cole eventually scoring on an RBI double by JV call-up?Kristin O'Connell, who came up clutch all game for the Huskers.

Miwa Wenzel then walked and both her and O'Connell?came home on Amanda Bozentko's double.

Mahopac got one more run in its last at-bat but it wasn't enough to overcome the Huskers and winning pitcher Nicole Wilson.

?Nicole is a senior pitcher who is calm under pressure," McKenna said. "She gave up a home run early in the game but limited everything. She gave herself and the team a chance to get out in front. She kept everything simple.?
