Getty ImagesAt some point over the past week or so, I?ve created the impression that I favor ?term limits? for the Hall of Fame voters.
I don?t.
I favor expansion of the process and diversity of the voting pool, with former players and coaches and Hall of Famers having a say.? If the voting is going to remain in the hands of only 44 people, I favor a higher level of scrutiny as to who gets a ticket to enter, and to continue to remain in, the meeting room.
Some (including newly-minted Hall of Famer Willie Roaf) have argued in favor of term limits.? I simply favor finding the best group of people to determine who enters the Hall of Fame, along with keeping them in place for as long as they continue to be among the best group of people to determine who enters the Hall of Fame.
I mention this because Peter King?s latest item regarding the criticism of the Hall of Fame selection process quotes an email to him from another voter, who contends that I am ?banging the drum for turnover and a fresh crop of selectors every few years.?? I never have said that, and I don?t think that a ?fresh crop? every few years would improve the process.
The voter who emailed Peter also writes that ?[s]everal of us are questioning whether we want to continue on the committee,? and that ?[t]he pressure and responsibility at times is overwhelming.?? Peter says that he?s also considering stepping aside from an assignment that ?has gone from an honor to equal parts burden and honor.?
This is the part where collegiality and political correctness would compel me to do the predictable thing, and to plead publicly with Peter to not resign.? But I?m not going to do that, even though the committee as constituted would be far worse off without him.
Every year, a narrow window opens for offering criticism of the current Hall of Fame selection process.? If the folks who run the Hall of Fame can keep their heads low for a week or two in early February, everything dies down and anyone inclined to clamor for change moves on to the Scouting Combine and free agency.? It therefore will require something significant to get the attention of those who have the authority to implement improvements to the process.
If Peter and others believe that what was once an honor is now too much of a burden due to increased scrutiny and pressure, then the Hall of Fame?s Board of Trustees must find a way to address the situation by, for example, expanding the panel and in turn diluting the power, and the ensuing pressure, that each member of the selection committee possesses.? If the Hall of Fame?s Board of Trustees choose to continue to do nothing, then Peter and others who no longer enjoy serving should resign.? If that?s what it takes to get the Hall of Fame?s Board of Trustees to take meaningful steps to improve the process, then in the long run it wouldn?t be a bad thing.
The voter who emailed Peter also writes that ?there are fewer of us who can commit to attending the meeting each year.?? Setting aside the fact that virtually the entire working NFL media descends on the Super Bowl host city for the full week preceding the championship game and the fact that the selection meeting occurs in the host city the day before the Super Bowl, the simplest answer to that specific problem is this:? Scuttle the selection meeting.
If/when the pool of voters grows, it will be even harder to convene the meeting.? So just get rid of it.? The baseball writers don?t have a meeting, and they still manage to put people into Cooperstown every year.
In a world that has changed dramatically over the last two decades, the Hall of Fame?s selection process has become outdated, in several ways.? With millions more people paying attention to the NFL and thus to its Hall of Fame, far more than 44 should hold the keys to Canton.? With largely forgotten players who weren?t able to secure enshrinement when competing against their peers automatically claiming up to two spots per year that could go to more deserving candidates who played the game in its far more popular and significant modern era, the Senior Selection Committee should be regarded as having served its purpose, and it should be retired.? And with numerous means of instantaneous communication now available, a Highlander-style gathering of the voters, whether the number is 44 or 4400, is inefficient and unnecessary.
It would be unfortunate if Peter and multiple other competent voters resign in the face of increased pressure exacerbated by the failure of the Hall of Fame?s Board of Trustees to even acknowledge the annual calls for change.? Still, if a mass walkout by the voters doesn?t get the Board of Trustees? attention, then nothing will.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Conservatives said Sunday the flap surrounding President Barack Obama's birth control mandate was far from over, with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell saying he'll push to overturn the requirement because it was another example of government meddling.
While a senior White House official shrugged off such remarks, declaring the issue resolved and new legislation unlikely, the heated rhetoric from Republicans suggested the GOP would try to keep the debate alive in an election year to rally conservatives and seize upon voter frustration with big government.
"It's riddled with constitutional problems," McConnell said of Obama's broader health-care plan. "And this is what happens when the government tries to take over health care and tries to interfere with your religious beliefs."
Last week, Obama backed down on a mandate that religious-affiliated employers such as Catholic hospitals and colleges cover birth control in their health insurance plans. In a tweak of the rule, those employees would be offered free coverage directly from their health insurer. But employers would not provide or pay for it.
The White House says the plan won't drive up costs because birth control, similar to other preventative care measures, is less expensive than pregnancy. But opponents say that unless drug makers stop charging for contraception, the cost is likely to get passed on to employers regardless.
While some Catholic groups applauded the move, including the Catholic Health Association, the nation's Catholic bishops said it continued the attack religious freedoms ? a theme quickly picked up by Republicans trying to wrest control of the White House this November.
"There's no compromise here," said GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, a Catholic and favorite among religious conservatives. "They are forcing religious organizations, either directly or indirectly, to pay for something that they find is a deeply, morally, you know, wrong thing. And this is not what the government should be doing."
In several televised interviews, White House chief of staff Jacob Lew defended the latest plan as the best possible compromise to provide women access to contraceptives and respect the religious freedoms of employers. Churches had always been exempt under Obama's original plan, although religious-affiliated organizations were not.
"We didn't expect to get universal support of the bishops or all Catholics," he said. "I think that what we have here is a policy that reflects bringing together two very important principles in a way that's true to the American tradition."
Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., has called Obama's revised plan an "accounting gimmick." He introduced legislation last week that would exempt any organization with moral objections from providing birth control. McConnell said he expects such a bill would be vetoed by the president but that he still wanted a vote "as soon as possible."
House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan said there were enough votes in the Republican-controlled House to pass similar legislation.
"If this is what the president's willing to do in a tough election year, imagine what he will do in implementing the rest of his health care law after an election," Ryan, R-Wis., told ABC News "This Week."
Lew shrugged off questions about Senate legislation, predicting that they would not "come to pass" and that the president planned to move ahead with implementing the current plan.
"We're going to go ahead and implement it," Lew said. "And women are going to have access (to contraception) and institutions like Catholic universities and Catholic hospitals will not be in the position that they had feared. I think that's a good resolution."
Santorum and Lew spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press." McConnell and Lew spoke on CBS "Face the Nation." Lew also spoke on Fox News Sunday, CNN's "State of the Union" and ABC News "This Week."

Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expressions of PTTG, bFGF and Endostatin and their relationships in colorectal cancer. We approached the effect of PTTG, bFGF and Endostatin in the occurrence of colorectal cancer invasion.Material and Methods: The specimens were taken from Pathology Division of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from October 2003 to December 2004. They were 57 surgical resected filing wax blocks of colorectal adenocarcinoma, including 28 males and 29 females; The median age was 56 years (31-78 years). By Dukes stage for the A + B 31 cases, C + D 26 cases. 21 cases were well-differentiated, and 36 cases were poorly differentiated. There were 26 cases with lymph nodes metastasis and 31 cases without lymph nodes metastases through conventional lymph nodes check. NEW YORK (AP) ? The bright lights of the big city bring out the best in Bernard Lagat.
With the crowd at its feet, Lagat glided down the track toward the record he came here to break. The 37-year-old regained his American record in the indoor 5,000 meters Saturday, finding a new way to make history at the Millrose Games.
Afterward he slapped hands with fans leaning over the railings as he slowly made his victory lap. At a meet that features top high school and college runners along with the pros, Lagat relishes his role as track ambassador.
"They might want to emulate what we have done. I like that. I give them a show," he said. "I told them, 'You know what? You can keep doing this as long as possible if you keep yourself in good training and being healthy and being disciplined.'"
Lagat has won a record eight titles in the meet's signature event, the Wanamaker Mile. This time, he raced the 5,000 to try to break the mark Galen Rupp set last year. Lagat did so convincingly, winning in 13 minutes, 7.15 seconds to lower the standard by more than 4 seconds.
He and Rupp traded American indoor records Saturday, in fact, with Rupp breaking Lagat's 2-mile mark in Arkansas. Lagat was proud of the 25-year-old Rupp ? not that he plans to let him keep the record.
"Then I will be able to do it again in the future," Lagat said, smiling.
On a cross-country flight to New York, Lagat's coach, James Li, couldn't sleep, so he wrote down the splits his pupil would need to run, predicting a 13:07 finish.
"It really worked to the T," Li said.
Li's tutelage also worked for another of his runners, Lawi Lalang, who he coaches at Arizona. Lalang, who trains with Lagat, came in second and shattered the college record, also held by Rupp.
Millrose moved uptown to the Armory this year after nearly a century at Madison Square Garden. With Lagat out of the Wanamaker, Matthew Centrowitz, the world bronze medalist in the 1,500, won in 3:53.92. At age 22, the American is young enough to perhaps break Lagat's record of eight titles someday.
Sanya Richards-Ross had some long-distance traveling of her own this past week. The five-time world outdoor gold medalist was in Indianapolis last Sunday for the Super Bowl to cheer on her husband, New York Giants cornerback Aaron Ross. From there she flew to San Diego for a sponsor's event, then on to New York, where she won the 400 in 50.89.
Ross had hoped to root for his wife at Millrose but was attending his grandfather's funeral in Texas on Saturday.
"It was a long week, kind of a roller coaster," Richards-Ross said.
World champion Jenny Simpson held off Shannon Rowbury in the Wanamaker Women's Metric Mile in a show of strength for American middle distance running. Simpson took the lead early and won in 4:07.27 to beat Rowbury, the 2009 world bronze medalist, by 0.39 seconds.
"It was definitely a hard way to run," Simpson said of racing at the front of the pack. "It was tough the last 800 meters."
LaShawn Merritt, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the 400, felt a little out of sorts in racing ? and winning ? the 500. The course setup and the start were different than he expected, so he fell short of his goal of breaking the indoor world record in the unusual distance. His time of 1:01.39 was more than a second off the mark.
But Merritt was pleased with how good his legs felt after he finished the longer-than-normal race.
