Bizarre internal Apple video shows Steve Jobs rallying the troops against IBM
We're going to warn you up front: what you're about to see is eccentric, puzzling, and perhaps even disturbing. And undoubtedly, it's the fanboy film to end all fanboy films. According to Network World, who managed to get ahold of an internal 'rally the troops' video, the referenced clip was produced with a $50,000 budget and shown to an international sales force at a 1984 meeting in Hawaii. The film, entitled "1944," was purportedly provided by one-time Apple employee Craig Elliott, now CEO of Pertino Networks. The vintage footage shows then-CEO Steve Jobs as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the nine minute film drags on to show Apple-clad soldiers lining up to do battle with IBM -- a massive, massive rival in the space during that era. EchoStar outs its HDT-610R Ultra Slim Box, says it's 'world's slimmest' DVR
EchoStar has come a long way since unveiling that HDS-600RS early last year, and today the European company's taking the wraps off of its newest DVR, the Ultra Slim Box HDT-610R. Keeping true to its moniker, the 610R measures in at a slim 14mm thin, while weighing in at just under two pounds. Physical features aside, EchoStar's managed to stuff a 500GB hard drive inside the DVR's scrawny body, as well as a couple of USB 2.0 incisions and single Ethernet and HDMI ports. On the software end, the device is equipped with a Freeview+ HD feature that offers subscription-free access to over 50 "high quality" and four high-def channels -- though, you will have to pay a one-time fee for the service. The HDT-610R will be available for pre-order starting May 4th, with Amazon, John Lewis and Mapling being the first online vendors to have it for up for grabs. No word on pricing yet, but in the meantime all you Euro folks can gander at the PR below to soak up the rest of the deets.

Britney Spears Shuts Down The Wanted's Tour Claims
Singer's rep denies that the guys were bullied by her bouncers and warns Lady Gaga she might be next on the boy band's hit list.

<P>It seems that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wanted_boy_band_/artist.jhtml">The Wanted</a> are on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' "Most Wanted" list.</P><P>Just one day after the boy band made headlines for a claim they made about touring with the pop star, her rep has released a statement shutting down their allegations.</P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:762692/cp~vid%3D762692%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A762692" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></P><P>It all started Monday with a New York radio station interview. <a href="/news/articles/1684195/the-wanted-britney-spears.jhtml">The Wanted's Siva Kaneswaran dished</a> about hitting the road with Spears back in November 2011, claiming, "I was in the hallway with my tour manager. Basically, we were looking with a laptop, trying to get WiFi ... facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall ... We turned around and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away."</P><P>Spears' camp, it seems, isn't taking their allegations lightly. In a statement to MTV News, her rep shut down the boy bander's account of the events. "What's even more interesting than the false allegations they made is the fact that they have claimed to be picked on by two female pop stars in just a few days," the rep said. "Look out, Lady Gaga — there are still three days left this week."</P><P>Well, Brit's camp should take note that one of the guys from the Wanted, in the same interview, attempted to do some damage control. Jay McGuiness added, "But, honestly, when we actually met her person to person, she was so down to earth. You can tell she's a total Southern girl, and Nathan [Sykes], when he was a kid, won a singing competition. She was one of the judges or something, and she gave him a kiss. It was one of his first kisses as a kid. So, he got to meet her again and support her."</P><P>That warmer sentiment was one they also shared with MTV News just a week ago, when they sat down with us to premiere their <a href="/news/articles/1683818/the-wanted-chasing-the-sun-video-premiere.jhtml">"Chasing the Sun" video</a>. "She's lovely as well. We haven't really met people who aren't very nice, and Britney was just very, very nice," Sykes said of his teen dream. "She was kind of what you'd expect her to be: very happy and American." And, Parker said even though her bodyguards were kind of scary, Britney had "lovely teeth."</P><P>It wasn't the first time the guys publicly criticized an experience with a female pop star. Although they've since <a href="/news/articles/1684084/the-wanted-christina-aguilera-apology.jhtml">apologized for it</a> (sort of), Tom Parker had said that when they stopped by "The Voice," <a href="/news/articles/1684009/the-wanted-christina-aguilera.jhtml">Christina Aguilera</a> was "<link type="content" id="1684009">a total bitch</a>." "She might not be a bitch in real life, but to us, she was a total bitch. She just sat there and didn't speak to us. Auto-composing keyboard creates tunes tailored to your taste
We love listening to our favorite tunes, as they provide a soundtrack to our otherwise dull and silent blogging existence. But, sometimes the lyrical stylings of Jay-Z and glorious jams of Trey Anastasio simply don't meet our musical needs. We need something different, something never before heard by human ears, to get us through the news day. Enter Cornell students Charong Chen and Siyu Zhan, who have constructed an electric keyboard that one ups Yamaha's singing piano by creating and playing its own compositions. Users simply select between two mood modes -- happy or tender -- to determine the tune's tempo, then play a couple notes and the piano sets to sating sonic cravings. There's another mode that allows users to play a melody to "train" the keyboard, which then plays permutations of that melody in an automated jam session. In that training mode, users can play as long as they like to give the keyboard a better idea of what they're into, which allows the algorithm to better tailor its audial output. The hardware making the music happen is comprised of a microcontroller (MCU) with the composing algorithm on board, a numpad for choosing the operational mode, and a 23-key piano that communicates with the MCU through a trio of encoders. The results are impressive, if not quite concert-hall quality. Hear it for yourself in the video after the break.

Santorum wants promises from Romney before backing
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum wants to ensure the GOP's policy platform represents conservatives' interests. Newt Gingrich wants help retiring his campaign debt and repairing his reputation.
Both Republicans are expected to endorse their former rival Mitt Romney ? and signal to their backers to fall in line behind the party's presumptive nominee ? but each wants assurances that Romney will deliver for them. Neither is rushing toward the task.
Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is going to go that way. Paul is still in the race and hasn't yet recognized Romney as the party's nominee. The tea party favorite and former Libertarian presidential nominee seems unlikely to endorse given deep differences with Romney on economic and foreign policy issues.
Romney plans to meet Santorum on Friday and Gingrich plans to endorse him this week, an end-of-primary dance that happens every four years once the party settles on a nominee.
Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, quit the race April 10 but has stopped short of publicly embracing Romney as the GOP's standard bearer after a bitter primary season that featured Santorum calling Romney "the worst Republican in the country" to run against Obama.
Not long after, Santorum was telling CNN's Piers Morgan about Romney, "It's very clear that he's going to be the Republican nominee and I'm going to be for the Republican nominee and we're going to do everything we can to defeat Barack Obama." Morgan could not goad him into a proper endorsement.
Gingrich all but bowed out last week, saying: "It's clear Romney is the nominee and the focus should be on defeating Obama. We should not focus on defeating ourselves."
He plans to officially end his campaign in the coming days and endorse Romney.
Romney, for his part, has been working to bring the party together after a bruising primary season, and nods from Santorum and Gingrich could help mend those wounds. Both Santorum and Gingrich have fervent followings among conservatives who make up the base of the party and who generally view Romney skeptically because of his positions on a host of issues.
Romney has changed his position on bedrock issues such as abortion and gay rights. He supported the 2008 Wall Street bailout that angered conservatives and paved the way for the rise of the tea party. And he signed a health care overhaul as governor that provided the groundwork for Democrats' national law that requires all Americans to buy insurance or face a fine. Romney's health care overhaul in Massachusetts required health care coverage.
That's the primary issue Santorum plans to discuss Friday when he meets privately with Romney.
"We want to make sure he doesn't replace it with any kind of mandate," Santorum adviser Hogan Gidley said. He added, "Rick just wants to have a candid, open conversation about making sure the folks in the 11 states that voted for him, and the conservative movement, have a voice in the Romney campaign."
Advisers caution that an endorsement ? or a public appearance for that matter ? is unlikely to immediately follow Santorum's private meeting with Romney.
Santorum is in no rush to rally to Romney's side. People close to Santorum said deep resentment remains between the men. But he also recognizes he risks looking like a sore loser and is expected to eventually support Romney.
Even so, key members of Santorum's team have rallied behind Romney in recent weeks. Mike Biundo, Santorum's former campaign manager, signed on with the Romney campaign in Boston to lead outreach to conservatives. Foster Friess, the driving force behind a pro-Santorum super PAC that kept his presidential ambitions afloat, has agreed to rejoin Romney's camp.
For Santorum, there are political considerations if he is to keep the door open to a future presidential run. He has tremendous sway among conservatives, and is mindful of his personal political brand. Embracing a candidate whom some conservatives don't trust could backfire in the long run because many of Santorum's supporters voted for him in hopes of preventing Romney from winning.
So, people close to Santorum said, he wants assurances from Romney that the party's platform would represent conservatives' interests, and that Romney would govern as a conservative.
Unlike Gingrich, Santorum also doesn't need Romney's help to retire campaign debt.
Gingrich has reported more than $4.5 million in debt. He is looking for other quick ways to pay off vendors and has rented out his e-mail lists to private businesses.
A better option would be a nod from Romney to his supporters that it's time to help the one-time foe, much as he did for former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who bowed out last summer and locked arms with his rival. Romney thanked him with a check for $2,500 ? the maximum personal donation allowed ? as did at least 12 other family members.
Gingrich also leaves the GOP campaign with his reputation battered. He is looking to repair his standing as one of the party's intellectual heavyweights. Romney, now the party's leader, could afford him that platform.
But Gingrich hasn't yet committed to a joint appearance with Romney. He might just do it on his own and be done with it. Understated endorsements have been the norm this year.
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced he was backing Romney in a written statement, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman announced his withdrawal from the race and endorsement of Romney without Romney at his side.
