Social Lemurs Have More 'Street Smarts,' Study Finds

Lemurs that come from big tribes and live in large groups exhibit more "social smarts" than those that live with only a few companions, finds a new study that suggests the size of a primate's social network could influence its social intelligence.

Researchers designed a series of experiments to test lemurs' social cognition. Essentially, the scientists were curious how lemurs process a situation ? specifically, how they decide whether or not a human can see them ? and then how they use that information in manipulative ways ? in this case, to steal a piece of food if they think they are not being watched, said lead study author Evan MacLean, a senior researcher in the department of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

"There's an idea that animals that live in big groups develop important psychological abilities, because they have to figure out how to get their way in an environment where they can't always get their way," MacLean told LiveScience. [Images: Duke University's Lemur Center]

The researchers first taught the lemurs that humans are competitors by introducing them to food that human subjects eventually took away.

Then, in one of the tests, a human subject sat facing a plate of food as a lemur entered the room, while another human sat with his back turned. In another scenario, two human testers sat either facing toward or away from the food, with only their profiles visible to a lemur as it entered the room. In the third test, the human testers faced the food and the lemur, while either wearing a blindfold over their eyes, or a black band over their mouths.

The researchers tested 60 lemurs from six different species at the Duke Lemur Center, and found that species that live in larger groups of 15 to 20 individuals, such as the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), were more responsive to social cues, meaning they were better at judging when humans could not see them, and therefore when they could successfully steal food.

"Lemurs who live in big social groups in nature were much better at using those cues to figure out what somebody could or couldn't see," MacLean said.

Lemurs that typically live in small groups with only two to three companions, such as the mongoose lemur (Eulemur mongoz), were less perceptive in their social abilities, he added. Lemurs from all species, however, had trouble in the third scenario, when humans had their eyes or mouths covered. For instance, lemurs did not readily understand that a person facing food with his eyes covered could not actually see.

"Some species of monkeys have been shown to understand those subtle conditions, but it was something that the lemurs didn't seem to get," MacLean said.

The findings appear to draw a link between social group size and cognition, but MacLean and his colleagues want to investigate the specific ways that being socially savvy improves intelligence, and an animal's ability to make social judgments.

"One of the main things that's interesting for us is to see if social groups set the context for where we really need to use intelligence," MacLean said. "If the social environment leads to evolutionary changes in intelligence, does it make you smarter across the board, or does it make you smarter in very specific ways?"

The findings of the study were published June 27 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Mandela: A hard act to follow for South Africans

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? In November, just before Nelson Mandela's health began a long downward spiral, the leader of a project to build a children's hospital named after the former president briefed him on efforts to raise construction funds. Mandela, 94 years old and infirm, was exasperated by the delays. Then the reflexes of the world statesman took over.

"Well, get me a few business people. Sit them around my table here and I'll tell them why this is important," Mandela said, according to Sibongile Mkhabela, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust. The fundraiser didn't happen, but the remark was a poignant hint of the Mandela of old, the charismatic leader who, as Mkhabela put it, "knew how to make people believe in things that were not there yet."

Today Mandela is critically ill in a Pretoria hospital, seemingly close to the end of his life. As the day approaches, whenever it comes, many South Africans are caught in an emotional reckoning. They celebrate this father figure, whose jail-time sacrifice and peacemaking role in the transition from apartheid to democracy resonated worldwide, but they face the hard road of trying to emulate his example and implement his legacy after he is gone.

"There's a part of Mandela in each of us," said Anthony Prangley, a lecturer at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, a University of Pretoria business school whose campus is in Johannesburg.

"It's important to keep that in mind because we can start to see him as someone who is not accessible, or infallible," he said. "In doing so, we miss the potential to learn from his leadership."

Mandela's achievements were historic even though he admitted imperfection and sought to share credit with others. That humility left a deep impression on many who met him.

The anti-apartheid leader spent 27 years in jail, but was seemingly free of rancor on his release in 1990, steering South Africa through a delicate transition to all-race elections that propelled him to the presidency four years later. The outpouring of support for the ailing Mandela, who was taken to the hospital on June 8 for what the government said was a lung infection, attests to his ability to connect and inspire in his country, even if it is struggling to live up to his soaring vision, and around the world.

"If and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages," President Obama said in Senegal before arriving in South Africa on Friday as part of an Africa tour. Obama is to meet with Mandela's relatives Saturday, though he has said he will not visit the hospital where Mandela is receiving treatment.

The United Nations has recognized July 18, Mandela's birthday, as an international day to honor themes of activism, democracy and responsibility embodied by the former leader. Organizers of events in his honor suggest participants spend 67 minutes engaged in acts of goodness on that day ? 67 corresponds to the number of years Mandela is said to have spent in public service.

"It's possible for our societies to have 'Mandelas' so long as we don't take away from ourselves the responsibilities to learn, to be better, to aspire to something bigger," said Mkhabela, the CEO. She said she worried when people put Mandela on "such a high pedestal," setting aside the need to follow his humanitarian values.

"This just sounds like another way of saying: 'We don't want to be responsible, we feel and fear in us there is a 'Mandela' that could be unleashed. It's too big a responsibility, too big a challenge,'" she said.

The business world has taken note of Mandela as a role model. He ranked fourth on a list of admired leaders, according to a global survey late last year of 1,330 chief executive officers in 68 countries. Winston Churchill, Steve Jobs and Mahatma Gandhi led the field in the survey, conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The survey said many CEOs "chose leaders who were persistent in the face of adversity ? as well as transformational leaders and leaders who did the 'right thing.'"

Prangley, the business school lecturer, said a great leader doesn't just inspire and have many followers, but also reaches out to other constituencies. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., he said, became more effective by winning over white Americans, and Mahatma Gandhi sought to unite Muslims and Hindus, even though India was partitioned. President Obama energized crowds early on but now struggles to rally people when things sour, according to Prangley, who praised Mandela's political skill.

"He understands when to push and when to bring other people to the table," he said of Mandela's skill in balancing firmness and compromise.

Prangley said he met Mandela as a student volunteer in Mozambique in the late 1990s, recalling how the former president told him and his young colleagues that it was a "wizened" group of older leaders who had led the negotiations that ended apartheid.

"In South African society, it was the older generation who began to compromise and brought change," Prangley said. "It was a message to us, as young people at that time, to kind of learn from that experience."

Mandela, though, was hardly a stuffy patriarch. He had cross-generational appeal. He wore colorful, patterned shirts when president and was known for warmth and attention to personal detail despite a somewhat regal, even stiff bearing.

Those who have worked with Mandela, a philanthropist who joined the fight against the AIDS epidemic in South Africa and other humanitarian causes, often share what they learned with colorful anecdotes about the former president, also known by his clan name, Madiba. Achmat Dangor, the former head of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, a Johannesburg-based foundation, picked up tips about the stubborn art of fundraising.

"I've been on occasions with heads of state and certain great persons somewhere who made a pledge, and Madiba called me and said, 'You sit here until they give you something in writing, you don't leave,'" Dangor told a foundation audience in May. "'Thank you, Prime Minister. Your Excellency, thank you.' And yes, I didn't leave without a note. A million pounds came a couple of years later, but it came."

Mandela also stressed the importance of getting opposing sides to speak to each other, said Dangor, who described how he and a colleague once approached Mandela to discuss dialogue initiatives.

Dangor recalled: "He listened very carefully and then he said, 'Listen I want to tell you something. You know, when you get people together who agree with each other, and they're friends, that's not dialogue. That's a chat. Bring together those who disagree with each other.'"

People rescue garment workers trapped under rubble at the Rana Plaza building after it collapsed, in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka in this April 24, 2013 file photo. Sources says President Obama will suspend U.S. trade benefits to Bangladesh.

President Barack Obama is expected to announce on Thursday that the United States is suspending trade benefits for Bangladesh after two tragedies in a year in the country's garment sector that killed more than 1,200 workers, a congressional source said.

U.S. trade officials have said they expected Obama to announce a decision on the matter by the end of June. The U.S. Trade Representative's office did not have an immediate comment on whether an announcement would come Thursday.

Suspending Bangladesh from the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences program would increase U.S. duties on an array of products the Asian country exports to the United States, such as tobacco, sporting equipment, porcelain china, plastic products and a small amount of textile products.

But it would not directly affect Bangladesh's main export, clothing, since garments are not eligible for duty cuts under the GSP program, which was created in 1976 to help economic development in the world's poorest countries and to reduce import costs for U.S. companies.

In 2012, Bangladesh was spared about $2 million in U.S. duties on about $35 million worth of goods under GSP, but it paid about $732 million in U.S. duties on $4.9 billion of clothing exports not covered by the program, according to Ed Gresser, a trade analyst with the GlobalWorks Foundation.

Still, Obama's decision would be a repudiation of working conditions in Bangladesh following the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory building in April that killed 1,129 people and the Tazreen factory fire in November that killed 112. Clothing for several American and European retailers is made in Bangladesh.

It also could influence the European Union's decision whether to suspend trade benefits for Bangladesh, which would have far more impact since Bangladesh's clothing and textiles exports receive duty-free treatment there.

The EU imported roughly 9.2 billion euros ($12.13 billion) of goods from Bangladesh last year, according to data from the EU's executive, the European Commission.

Clothing and textile products ranging from towels and bedding accounted for almost 93 percent of those goods.

EU officials have threatened to kick Bangladesh out of the program - a process that could take more than a year - unless it improves worker safety conditions.

U.S. citizen killed in Egyptian violence: officials

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt (Reuters) - A U.S. citizen was stabbed to death in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Friday during clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Mursi, a doctor and three security officials said.

A U.S. embassy official said: "The U.S. embassy has heard of the reports of the death of an American citizen and is seeking to confirm them."

The young American man died from a wound to the chest, said General Amin Ezzeddin, a senior Alexandria security official. Another man, an Egyptian, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head.

The violence erupted when anti-Mursi protesters tried to storm offices used by Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood in Alexandria, a city on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The American had been recording the events by camera.

"There were two deaths - an Egyptian, and an American who was wounded during the events. He was filming," Ezzedin said.

"He was wounded during his presence in the events and the clashes. He was wounded in the chest, he fell unconscious, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital," he told Al Jazeera's Egypt news channel.

The account was confirmed by Ibrahim al-Roubi, head of the emergency unit in the Alexandria health department, and by two other security officials.

House not feeling the pressure on immigration reform | The Daily ...

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans do not appear to be feeling any pressure to take up immigration reform, despite efforts by supporters of the comprehensive immigration reform bill to pressure the House to take up the bill that many House Republicans find unpalatable.

Supporters of the bill in the Senate have said that regardless of what House leadership says now, once the Senate passes the bill, they are going to feel pressure to take up the immigration reform bill. They set 70 votes as the goal number, hoping it would show enough bipartisan support to potentially give the House cover in picking it up.

?A bill that comes out with 70 plus votes ? I think it would have a lot of momentum to get it through the House,? South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Gang of Eight, said last week.

?I want to do everything I can to maximize the number of votes we get on the bill,? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters at a press conference Tuesday, indicating that although it was not always helpful to getting legislation through the House, it would not hurt.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the leading Republican in the Gang of Eight, said on Friday that he hoped business interests, traditionally a base of the GOP, would push for the bill.

?One of the bases of the Republican Party is the business community,? McCain told reporters Thursday. ?The business community is solidly behind this: small business, large business, [U.S.] Chamber [of Commerce], Business Roundtable ? you name it. They?re all solidly in and believe that it?s very good for the economy. We need them to weigh in very frankly on this issue. Because we ? advertise ourselves as the party of business, and particularly small business, that perhaps they can have some effect.?

Not doing so would have devastating consequences for the future of the Republican Party, and its ability to woo the growing Hispanic population in future elections, McCain warned.

?I think it?s obviously very critical, in my view. But I?m not arguing it on that grounds ?cause otherwise then we get into this back and forth: ?no, Hispanics really don?t care.? ?Oh really?? ? I can assure you, they care. I can assure you that the passion level is as high as on any issue I?ve ever observed,? he said.

House Republicans seem unmoved by any of those factors.

Speaker of the House John Boehner told his conference at a meeting Wednesday morning that he would not bring the Senate bill to the floor, regardless of how many Republican votes it gets in the Senate later this week, Mississippi Republican Rep. John Fleming told reporters when he emerged from the meeting.

?He?s saying that you guys, the media, had this narrative out there that they?re gonna pass this bill with big numbers in the Senate, and we?re going to take it up over here. And he said, he has said in every way shape and form that just isn?t gonna happen. So he reemphasized that,? Fleming said.

The House will instead begin its own process, and Judiciary Committee Chairman Chairman Bob Goodlatte has indicated that he favors working on a series of smaller bills, rather than one comprehensive bill.

Oklahoma Republican Rep. Tom Cole told reporters that the 70 vote threshold in the Senate was not high enough.

?I think it?s dead on arrival here as is ?cause it couldn?t get the majority of Republicans there,? Cole told reporters Wednesday afternoon. ?All this sort of talk about a magic number of seventy ? if you?ve got all the Democrats, that?s 15 Republicans. Why on earth would a majority of Republicans embrace something in the House that a majority of Republicans didn?t embrace [in the Senate]??

?I don?t think this is a situation where the Senate is going to be able to stampede the House into action,? he added.

Idaho Republican Rep. Raul Labrador, one of the conservative members of the House who has been working on immigration reform, said during an event Wednesday that he disagreed with McCain and everyone else who said that passing immigration reform was imperative to the Republican Party?s survival.

?I think this is my biggest frustration with the Republican Party right now is that we?re running around like chickens with our heads cut off, thinking that we have to do this for political reasons,? Labrador said. ?We don?t have to do this for political reasons. In fact, the biggest mistake we can make as conservatives is to pander for the Hispanic community and think that the only way we can get votes is to vote a certain way on immigration.?

?Because if what we start doing is we start pandering and we start giving goodies out to people, then we?re going to get into a bidding war with the Democratic Party,? he continued. ?And if we get into a bidding war, we always lose, because the Demorats are always more willing to give goodies to a certain group than we are. So what we have to do is do things based on principle.?

That principle, he reiterated, was border security first, and then, when people were no longer entering the country illegally, a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country could be a feasible option.

Labrador was initially a member of a bipartisan group of House members working on an immigration bill, but he parted ways with the group after they failed to come to an agreement on healthcare. The impact of that group?s efforts has not yet been felt.

?The bipartisan group? What bipartisan group? ? The House group that?s been meeting in secret? Well, I mean, it?s meeting in secret. They don?t even acknowledge that they exist ? No one?s talking about that at all,? Fleming told a reporter who asked about the group?s effots.

Boehner told his conference that they would meet Wednesday, July 10, after they return from next week?s recess, and discuss how they will move forward with immigration reform, according to Fleming and Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Charlie Dent.

Obama making long-anticipated return to Africa

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is heading to Africa, and the health of former South African leader Nelson Mandela is hanging over the planned weeklong visit.

The first family departed Wednesday for Senegal. Other stops are scheduled for South Africa and Tanzania.

Obama has visited sub-Saharan Africa once before as president, and that was a brief stop in Ghana in 2009.

Mandela is hospitalized in South Africa and surrounded by family. White House advisers say they will defer to the anti-apartheid leader's relatives on whether he's up for a visit from Obama.

Missing from Obama's itinerary is Kenya, his father's birthplace and home to many of his relatives. Kenya's new president is facing war crimes charges, making it an awkward time for a U.S. president to visit.

Spain denies robbery was linked to team party

FORTALEZA, Brazil (AP) ? Spain has acknowledged six of its players were robbed during the first week of the Confederations Cup, but is denying the theft took place at a team party.

The Spanish Football Federation, which had previously declined to give specifics, issued a statement on Tuesday responding to reports in the Brazilian media that the theft was connected to a team party following a 2-1 victory over Uruguay in Recife nine days ago.

The federation "categorically denies" the reports and called the allegations damaging to "the honor of the players and their family and friends."

Brazilian media, citing employees of the hotel and security officials, reported that women from outside the Spanish traveling party and alcohol were involved in the party at the team hotel.

The Spanish federation said that "Six national team players were the subject of a robbery at the team's hotel in Recife during the stay for the game between Spain and Uruguay in the Confederations Cup. This was reported in a timely manner to the Brazilian police.

"This statement is not an attack against the organizing committee, nor against FIFA, nor the country of Brazil, which has welcomed the Spanish team. An event like this could take place anywhere in the world, including Spain.

"Since then, a series of verbal attacks on our players has been published, which the RFEF totally rejects and profoundly condemns. They damage the honor of the players and their family and friends."

The statement ended by saying the aim of the reports was to "cause harm to the good name of the players on the team, who have demonstrated good conduct, professionalism and exemplary behavior for many years."

Defender Gerard Pique, one the players reported by Brazilian media to have been involved, called the reports "a total lie."

Spain faces Italy on Thursday in the Confederations Cup semifinals, looking to reach the final on Sunday and win the only major tournament title it lacks. Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the last two European championships.

Security has long been a problem in Brazil, where muggings, carjackings and armed robberies are common. It's a concern leading up to the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Last Wednesday, the wife of Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar said she was robbed at gunpoint in Fortaleza, where Brazil played Mexico that day. In the capital Brasilia, the hotel room of at least one journalist was robbed before the opening match of the Confederations Cup.

Qatar's new emir raised profile with sports

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? Qatar's new ruler was the not the first choice to lead the Gulf nation and its growing political and economic ambitions.

Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani became the crown prince a decade ago ? at the age of 23 ? when his older brother Jassim gave up his position as emir-in-waiting.

That began a gradual grooming process for the British-educated Sheik Tamim inside Qatar's security and investment arms, which are bankrolled by enormous oil and gas wealth.

As deputy commander of the armed forces, he had sway over multibillion dollar arms purchases and direct dealing with defense officials from the U.S. and other Western allies. His senior role with the Qatar Investment Authority gave him a powerful voice over the direction of one of the world's most active sovereign wealth funds, whose landmark stakes around the world include Harrods department store in London and luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co.

But Sheik Tamim's most enduring international image to this point has been linked to sports.

His crowning moment came as he helped win Qatar's bid to host the 2022 World Cup. Sheik Tamim and other Qatari officials, however, later faced complaints that the nation used its vast wealth to swing support its way from football federation members in Africa and elsewhere.

Last year was less positive ? an International Olympic Committee member since 2002, Sheik Tamim headed Doha's unsuccessful bid for the 2020 Olympics. Qatar's capital has been mentioned as a possible bidder for the 2024 Games ? an effort that could get a boost from the new emir.

Sheik Tamim ? who also has served as head of Qatar's Olympic panel since 2000 ? helped avoid an embarrassing showdown with Olympic overseers by organizing the first female athletes representing Qatar for last year's London Olympics. Neighboring Saudi Arabia and the Asian country of Brunei also sent their first women Olympic athletes.

Sheik Tamim was educated at schools in England and then graduated from Sandhurst, Britain's prestigious military academy and alma mater for many Middle Eastern leaders.

His two wives include Sheika Anoud bint Mana al-Hajri, a member of a prominent Qatari family. He has six children.

Alaska sweating through brutal blast of heat

This photo taken Monday, June 17, 2013, shows people sunning at Goose Lake in Anchorage, Alaska. Parts of Alaska are setting high temperature records as a heat wave continues across Alaska. ?

By Sophia Rosenbaum, NBC News

Famed for its biting cold, Alaska is now sweating through a brutal heat wave that has gone from an oddball curiosity to a worrisome danger.

Spring never happened for many parts of the state, as a never-ending winter until mid-May gave way to record-breaking heat in June.

"It was an incredibly rapid transition," Michael Lawson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service based in Alaska, told NBC. "Literally, our spring was about five days before we jumped into summer-type weather."?

Temperatures in the 90s -- an extreme rarity -- were proceeded by a record-breaking cold snap. That caused rapid snow melts in parts of the state and localized flooding. Now, the above-normal heat has led to parts of Alaska to be placed under a red-flag warning for wildfires. ? ? ? ?

The National Weather Service issued the warning, in effect until Wednesday, because of the dry, windy conditions that could cause wildfires. Melissa Kreller, a meteorologist in Fairbanks for The Weather Channel,?said people should be extremely careful about lighting matches or throwing cigarettes on the ground over the next few days. In many areas, firework sales for the Fourth of July are banned.

The blast of heat started last week with temperatures in the mid-to-high 80s for most of Alaska. South-central Alaska had four all-time highs on June 17, with temperatures in Talkeetna reaching 94 degrees. In Fairbanks, the ?near-record temperatures? are expected Wednesday and Thursday to clock in at 91 degrees.

Temperatures above 90 are extremely rare in Alaska. Fairbanks has only experienced 90 or above 14 times since in 109 years. The record in Fairbanks is 95 degrees set back in 1915.

A large northward bulge in the jet stream is to blame, consensus shows. Why that has occurred is more hotly debated. Some scientists tie the jet stream's odd behavior on climate change. Other don't make the connections directly, instead seeing random weather or long-term cycles at work. And even more scientists are taking a wait-and-see approach.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NetNewsWire 4 enters open beta, gives Mac owners a new, local RSS reader option

As Google Reader's closing in on the end of its days, a spate of new RSS aggregators have popped up to replace it. Sure, web-based readers from AOL, Digg or Feedly could do the trick, but what if you want your RSS stored locally? You're in luck, because one of the elder statesmen in the RSS world, NetNewsWire, has what you need with its version 4 open beta. This new beta is a more refined version of NetNewsWire 4 Lite, which was released in 2011, and will allow folks to pull down all their GReader archives and store them locally for free while it's in beta. The catch? You've gotta be running Mac OS X 10.7.3 or later, and while the beta's free for now, the software will cost you once it's final -- $10 dollars for those who pre-order, and $20 after that.

Obama takes aim at changing climate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama declared the debate over climate change and its causes obsolete Tuesday as he announced a wide-ranging plan to tackle pollution and prepare communities for global warming.

In a major speech at Georgetown University, Obama warned Americans of the deep and disastrous effects of climate change, urging them to take action before it's too late.

"As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act," Obama said.

Obama announced he was directing his administration to launch the first-ever federal regulations on carbon dioxide emitted by new and existing power plants, moving to curb the gases blamed for global warming. Other aspects of the plan will boost renewable energy production on federal lands, increase efficiency standards and prepare communities to deal with higher temperatures.

Pharaoh's curse: Why that ancient Egyptian statue moves on its own

A millennia-old statue standing 10 inches tall has Manchester Museum employees in England stumped after a time-lapse video shows it making a 180-degree turn without anyone touching it.

By Marc Lallanilla, Life's Little Mysteries

An ancient Egyptian statue appears to have started moving on its own, much to the amazement of scientists and museum curators.

The statue of Neb-Senu, believed to date to 1800 B.C., is housed in the Manchester Museum in England ? at least for now. But if the statue keeps moving, there's no telling where it will end up.

"I noticed one day that it had turned around," museum curator Campbell Price told the?Manchester Evening News. "I thought it was strange because it is in a case and I am the only one who has a key.

"I put it back, but then the next day it had moved again," Price said. "We set up a time-lapse video and, although the naked eye can't see it, you can clearly see it rotate." [In Photos: Ancient Egyptian Skeletons Unearthed]

The 10-inch (25-centimeter) statue was acquired by the museum in 1933, according to the?New York Daily News. The video clearly shows the artifact slowly turning counterclockwise during the day, but remaining stationary at night.

This daytime movement led British physicist Brian Cox to suggest that the statue's movement is due to the vibration created by museum visitors' footsteps. "Brian thinks it's 'differential friction,' where two surfaces ? the stone of the statuette and glass shelf it is on ? cause a subtle vibration, which is making the statuette turn," Price said.

"But it has been on those surfaces since we have had it and it has never moved before," Price said. "And why would it go around in a perfect circle?"

Manchester Museum

This Egyptian statue from 1800 B.C. appears to move on its own.

Magnetism or friction?
On his?blog, Price also speculates that the statue "was carved of steatite and then fired [which] may imply that it is now vulnerable to magnetic forces." Steatite, also known as soapstone, is a soft stone often used for carving.

Oddly, the statue turns 180 degrees to face backward, then turns no more. This led some observers to wonder if the statue moves to show visitors the inscription on its back, which asks for sacrificial offerings "consisting of bread, beer, oxen and fowl."

None of the proposed explanations satisfies Price. "It would be great if someone could solve the mystery," he said.

Paul Doherty, senior scientist at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, says the statue's movement isn't caused by any?supernatural force, but probably by something quite ordinary: vibrational stick-slip friction, sometimes called stick-slip vibration.

As Doherty told LiveScience, if the glass shelf on which the statue rests vibrates even slightly, "the vibrating glass moves the statue in the same direction," causing it to turn around.

An everyday example can occur when someone uses an electric blender on a kitchen countertop: The vibration of the blender can cause a nearby coffee cup to "walk" across the countertop.

What makes it stop?
But why would the statue stop moving after turning 180 degrees? Doherty believes the statue stops turning because it's asymmetrically weighted: "One side of the statue has more weight than the other side," he said. After turning around on the shelf, the statue's uneven bottom reaches a more stable position and stops turning.

Besides the footsteps of passing museum visitors, the source of the stick-slip vibration "could be some trolley that goes by during the day, or a train that passes during the day," Doherty said.

Germany investigates commander of Nazi-led unit

BERLIN (AP) ? German prosecutors said Monday that they opened a formal preliminary investigation of a Minnesota man who was a commander of a Nazi-led unit during World War II, to determine whether there is enough evidence to bring charges and seek his extradition.

The Associated Press found that 94-year-old Michael Karkoc entered the U.S. in 1949 by lying to American authorities about his role in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, which is accused of torching villages and killing civilians in Poland. AP's evidence indicates that Karkoc was in the area of the massacres, although no records link him directly to atrocities.

Kurt Schrimm, the head of the special German prosecutors' office responsible for investigating Nazi-era crimes, said prosecutors "have opened a preliminary investigation procedure to examine the matter (and) seek documentation." It was unclear how long their examination might take.

Schrimm's office is responsible for determining whether there is enough evidence against alleged Nazi war criminals for state prosecutors to proceed with a full investigation and possible charges. The only charges that can be brought in such cases are murder and accessory to murder, as all other offenses fall under the statute of limitations under German law.

Germany has taken the position that people involved in Nazi crimes must be prosecuted, no matter how old or infirm, as it did in the case of retired Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, who died last year at age 91 while appealing his conviction as a guard at the Sobibor death camp.

Poland's National Remembrance Institute, which investigates Nazi and Soviet crimes, has said prosecutors are reviewing files on Karkoc's unit for any evidence that would justify charges and an extradition request.

It says the files were gathered during separate investigations into the killings of civilians in the village of Chlaniow, in southeastern Poland, and into Nazi suppression of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against German occupation. The AP found documentation showing that Karkoc's unit was involved in both.

Karkoc's son, Andriy Karkos, has said that his father "was never a Nazi," and pointed to the portion of the AP story that said records don't show Karkoc had a direct hand in war crimes. He has said the family won't comment further until it has obtained its own documents and reviewed witnesses and sources.

Self Improvement: Tips And Tricks For A Better You - ProjectPB ...

Initiating personal development is really hard sometimes. This exciting journey has multiple facets. These can range from developing better eating habits to thinking more positively. Many different methods for developing yourself exist, it?s just a case of choosing a path. Achieving your self improvement goals will leave you with a feeling of satisfaction, that everyone around you will notice.

Always read from multiple sources on self improvement. Having a good personal development book can give you insight and advice that will make a difference in your life forever. Books on the topic of self improvement can be poorly written. To avoid this, make sure you read books that have been reviewed well.

Spend time with people who are like-minded to you. Like-minded people will help strengthen your resolve while reinforcing positive attitudes.

TIP! Always make your own decisions, so you do not miss any opportunities that life is providing you. Make decisions based on your own knowledge and what you can learn from your research.

Anytime and anywhere, be ready for when your ideas strike. Carry a journal or diary with you, everywhere you go. Make detailed notes, and later, when you have the chance and are feeling creative, take your ideas further.

You should stay in great physical condition in order to get the best out of self improvement. Always keep a healthy routine that includes exercise, diet, and sleep in order to be successful. Though many take these simple things for granted, they are often hard to incorporate into personal habits.

A critical step of personal development is the realization and acceptance of your insignificance. You will want to learn all you can, once you realize that you have only scratched the surface of all there is to be known. Once you understand this concept, your natural desire to learn and grow will kick in, inspiring you to improve who you are.

TIP! Base your development plan on your values and goals. Focusing on areas contrary to your values does not make sense.

One way to raise your self-esteem is to give other people compliments. By being proactive and reaching out, being nice to others will help you to treat yourself nicely as well.

Each day should be an opportunity to top the previous day?s accomplishments. Keep aiming higher and higher. Encourage yourself to top yesterday?s accomplishments and set the stage for tomorrow?s successes.

Exercise is for everyone, not just people who are trying to lose a few pounds. There are many physiological benefits associate with exercise. For one thing, exercise stimulates your brain to produce chemicals that improve your mood.

TIP! Therapy is a good way to work through serious issues. While self-help books can be effective, many cannot provide the benefits that come from personal, targeted interaction with a therapist.

Do not boast about your accomplishments. Talk to people and find out more about their own achievements. You will find that you will learn more about those around you better by doing this. Not only that, you can respect them by knowing more about them.

Speaking to a pastor or a professional counselor can be very rewarding. They are trained to help you with issues, and also are experienced. They are able to look into your life from the outside and analyze things you can?t see. By speaking with a professional about your problems, you can lead a much healthier and enjoyable life.

Speaking to a therapist or religious official can really help you out. These professionals are trained and experienced in helping you understand and manage the issues you have. Their job is to listen to you and your concerns and help you gain a new outlook on your situation. Speaking with a professional is a great step toward personal development.

TIP! Treat everyone, regardless of status, with a high level of respect. The way you act toward others says something about your character, not theirs.

An excellent method of helping you with your anxiety is going to the movies with a friend. Movies are social settings, but they do not require conversation or uncomfortable socialization. This will help get you used to being in the same vicinity with lots of different people.

If you are never able to meet the goals you set, then it?s time to figure out your problem areas and make some changes. Try to find out what the goals of your peers are, and ask them how they?re able to meet them successfully. It?s possible your goals are too lofty, you?re missing a step along the way, or you?re just not putting the resources necessary into meeting your goal.

Are you a steady drinker? Do you make a habit of smoking or engaging in other harmful vices? Our body is a temple, and therefore it should be treated like one. Try getting rid of your bad habits; it can be important to making your life better. Look at your life, what you are doing that may be harmful, and work on omitting things that need to be removed from your life.

TIP! When dealing with depression issues, altering your diet to include a greater intake of complex carbohydrate may help. Serotonin can lower if you don?t eat enough carbs.

You should not shop out of comfort. Instead of shopping, spending money and adding more charges to your credit card bill, keep busy with a hobby. Not only will you have fewer debts to deal with, but your house will be less cluttered with stuff that you do not really need.

Hopefully this article has helped you learn a few ways to personally develop yourself better. You can always find new and innovative ways to improve the person that you are. Remember, you are never too old to develop positive personal habits.

You can learn how to handle difficult problems without over-reacting. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Take a few seconds to focus on your breathing.

TIP! Organization should be central in your life. Completing an organization project will make you feel confident and productive.

First time home buyer, where do I start? - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Hi there,

I know home buying can seem overwhelming, especially the first time.?? But really, it's just a series of steps.

The first step is to get pre-approved for a loan. And, not a quick pre-qualification, but a full documentation pre-approval. This is definitely not the fun part, but you need to know what your budget is.? I can send you a few lenders if you want. I prefer lenders with in-house underwriting so you stay within your contract dates in escrow.? Your choice of lender is super important, and I can't stress this enough. So many over promise (never in writing though) and under deliver. Or, can't deliver at all. This could cost you your deposit, the property, and hundreds of dollars of out-of-pocket escrow expenses. Interest rates change several times daily, so this is not the important thing when shopping lenders. They're pretty much all competitive.
?
Once you have that, you can start looking for homes that you know you? can buy in the area(s) you'll be looking. At this point, you'll know if you can buy a house (more maintenance, usually no HOA) or condo.

As you look at listings, you'll get to know your market(s) better too. By the? time you write your first offer, you'll be much more comfortable with pricing.

When you're ready to pull the trigger, it's time to start looking at homes.?
Your agent will guide you through escrow, and when it closes, you're a homeowner!

In the meantime though, you can start looking at listings based on a comfortable monthly payment for you. You may quality for more or less, and you don't have to spend as much as you're approved for.

Let me know if you'd like to start looking at listings. You can contact me off forum any time.

Warm Regards,

WikiLeaks: Snowden going to Ecuador

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Admitted leaker Edward Snowden took flight Sunday in evasion of U.S. authorities, seeking asylum in Ecuador and leaving the Obama administration scrambling to determine its next step in what became a game of diplomatic cat-and-mouse.

The former National Security Agency contractor and CIA technician fled Hong Kong and arrived at the Moscow airport, where he planned to spend the night before boarding an Aeroflot flight to Cuba. Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government received an asylum request from Snowden, and the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said it would help him.

"He goes to the very countries that have, at best, very tense relationships with the United States," said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., adding that she feared Snowden would trade more U.S. secrets for asylum. "This is not going to play out well for the national security interests of the United States."

The move left the U.S. with limited options as Snowden's itinerary took him on a tour of what many see as anti-American capitals. Ecuador in particular has rejected the United States' previous efforts at cooperation, and has been helping WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

Snowden helped The Guardian and The Washington Post disclose U.S. surveillance programs that collects vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, but often sweeping up information on American citizens. Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to examine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden has been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong.

During conversations last week, including a phone call Wednesday between Attorney General Eric Holder and Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong officials never raised any issues regarding sufficiency of the U.S. request, a Justice spokesperson said.

A State Department official said the United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is wanted on criminal charges and reiterating Washington's position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S.

The Justice Department said it would "pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel."

The White House would only say that President Barack Obama had been briefed on the developments by his national security advisers.

Russia's state ITAR-Tass news agency and Interfax cited an unnamed Aeroflot airline official as saying Snowden was on the plane that landed Sunday afternoon in Moscow.

Upon his arrival, Snowden did not leave Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. One explanation could be that he wasn't allowed; a U.S. official said Snowden's passport had been revoked, and special permission from Russian authorities would have been needed.

"It's almost hopeless unless we find some ways to lean on them," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

The Russian media report said Snowden intended to fly to Cuba on Monday and then on to Caracas, Venezuela.

U.S. lawmakers scoffed. "The freedom trail is not exactly China-Russia-Cuba-Venezuela, so I hope we'll chase him to the ends of the earth, bring him to justice and let the Russians know there'll be consequences if they harbor this guy," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

With each suspected flight, efforts to secure Snowden's return to the United States appeared more complicated if not impossible. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

The likelihood that any of these countries would stop Snowden from traveling on to Ecuador seemed unlikely. While diplomatic tensions have thawed in recent years, Cuba and the United States are hardly allies after a half century of distrust.

Venezuela, too, could prove difficult. Former President Hugo Chavez was a sworn enemy of the United States and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this year called Obama "grand chief of devils." The two countries do not exchange ambassadors.

U.S. pressure on Caracas also might be problematic given its energy exports. The U.S. Energy Information Agency reports Venezuela sent the United States 900,000 barrels of crude oil each day in 2012, making it the fourth-largest foreign source of U.S. oil.

"I think 10 percent of Snowden's issues are now legal, and 90 percent political," said Douglas McNabb, an expert in international extradition and a senior principal at international criminal defense firm McNabb Associates.

Assange's lawyer, Michael Ratner, said Snowden's options aren't numerous.

"You have to have a country that's going to stand up to the United States," Ratner said. "You're not talking about a huge range of countries here."

That is perhaps why Snowden first stopped in Russia, a nation with complicated relations with Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is "aiding and abetting Snowden's escape," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

"Allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways, and Putin always seems almost eager to put a finger in the eye of the United States," Schumer said. "That's not how allies should treat one another, and I think it will have serious consequences for the United States-Russia relationship."

It also wasn't clear Snowden was finished with disclosing highly classified information.

"I am very worried about what else he has," said Rep. Loretta Sanchez, a California Democrat who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said she had been told Snowden had perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents.

Ros-Lehtinen and King spoke with CNN. Graham spoke to "Fox News Sunday." Schumer was on CNN's "State of the Union." Sanchez appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press." Feinstein was on CBS' "Face the Nation."

White House urges Moscow to expel Snowden to US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. assumes National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden remains in Russia, and officials are working with Moscow in hopes he will be expelled and returned to America to face criminal charges, President Barack Obama's spokesman said Monday. He declared that a decision by Hong Kong not to detain Snowden has "unquestionably" hurt relations between the United States and China.

Snowden left Hong Kong, where he has been in hiding, and flew to Moscow but then apparently did not board a plane bound for Cuba as had been expected. His whereabouts were a mystery. The founder of the WikiLeaks secret-spilling organization, Julian Assange, said he wouldn't go into details about where Snowden was but said he was safe.

Snowden has applied for asylum in Ecuador, Iceland and possibly other countries, Assange said.

Obama, asked if he was confident that Russia would expel Snowden, told reporters: "What we know is that we're following all the appropriate legal channels and working with various other countries to make sure that the rule of law is observed."

Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, earlier Monday said the U.S. was expecting the Russians "to look at the options available to them to expel Mr. Snowden back to the United States to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged."

"The Chinese have emphasized the importance of building mutual trust," Carney added. "And we think that they have dealt that effort a serious setback. If we cannot count on them to honor their legal extradition obligations, then there is a problem. And that is a point we are making to them very directly."

Snowden has given highly classified documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens. He also told the South China Morning Post that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data."

Snowden still has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said over the weekend.

He had been in hiding in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition but was rebuffed by Hong Kong officials who said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws. The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong.

Said Carney: "We are just not buying that this was a technical decision by a Hong Kong immigration official. This was a deliberate choice by the government to release a fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant, and that decision unquestionably has a negative impact on the U.S.-China relationship."

The dual lines of diplomacy ? harsh with China, hopeful with the Russians ? came just days after Obama met separately with leaders of both countries in an effort to close gaps on some of the major disputes facing them.

Snowden arrived in Moscow on Sunday, but his whereabouts were thrown into question Monday when a plane took off from Moscow for Cuba with an empty seat booked in his name. The U.S. has revoked his passport.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said it would be "deeply troubling" if Russia or Hong Kong had adequate notice about Snowden's plans to flee to a country that would grant him asylum and still allowed him leave.

"We don't know, specifically, where he may head, or what his intended destination may be," Kerry said, responding to a question during a news conference in New Delhi where he was discussing bilateral issues between the U.S. and India.

U.S. officials pointed to improved cooperation with the Russians in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing and to assistance the U.S. has given Russia on law enforcement cases.

"We continue to hope that the Russians will do the right thing," Kerry told NBC News. "We think it's very important in terms of our relationship. We think it's very important in terms of rule of law. These are important standards. We have returned seven criminals that they requested for extradition from the United States over the last two years. So we really hope that the right choice will be made here."

"We don't know, specifically, where he may head, or what his intended destination may be," Kerry said during a news conference in New Delhi.

Carney said the U.S. was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries through which Snowden might travel or where he might end up.

"The U.S. is advising these governments that Mr. Snowden is wanted on felony charges and as such should not be allowed to proceed in any further international travel, other than is necessary to return him here to the United States," Carney said.

An Aeroflot representative who wouldn't give her name told The Associated Press that Snowden wasn't on flight SU150 to Havana, which was filled with journalists trying to track him down.

In Moscow, security around the aircraft was heavy prior to boarding and guards tried to prevent the scrum of photographers and cameramen from taking pictures of the plane, heightening the speculation that Snowden might have been secretly escorted on board.

After spending a night in Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, Snowden had been expected to fly to Cuba and Venezuela en route to possible asylum in Ecuador.

Some analysts said it was likely that the Russians were questioning Snowden, interested in what he knew about U.S. electronic espionage against Moscow.

"If Russian special services hadn't shown interest in Snowden, they would have been utterly unprofessional," Igor Korotchenko, a former colonel in Russia's top military command turned security analyst, said on state Rossiya 24 television.

The White House's tough response to Hong Kong's decision to let Snowden leave came just two weeks after Obama met with Chinese President Xi Jinping for two days of personal diplomacy in a desert retreat in California.

Carney said that after the U.S. sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong, authorities there requested additional information from the U.S.

"The U.S. had been in communication with Hong Kong about these inquiries and we were in the process of responding to the request when we learned that Hong Kong authorities had allowed the fugitive to leave Hong Kong," Carney said.

Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, said his government had received an asylum request, adding Monday that the decision "has to do with freedom of expression and with the security of citizens around the world."

Ecuador has rejected some previous U.S. efforts at cooperation and has been helping Assange avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

But Assange's comments that Snowden had applied in multiple places opened other possibilities of where he might try to go.

WikiLeaks has said it is providing legal help to Snowden at his request and that he was being escorted by diplomats and legal advisers from the group.

Icelandic officials have confirmed receiving an informal request for asylum conveyed by WikiLeaks, which has strong links to the tiny North Atlantic nation. But authorities there have insisted that Snowden must be on Icelandic soil before making a formal request.

CommaFeed

CommaFeed (free) straddles two worlds. It offers a Web-based RSS feed reader to be your Google Reader placement: import your feeds and you are good to go in an environment that looks almost like Google Reader. It also lets the intrepid DIY-er download the actual software from GitHub to build a personal RSS reader on RedHat's OpenShift platform. Build it, and you will never have to worry about losing your RSS reader ever again.

If you don't want to deal with code, you just register for an account on CommaFeed.com. If you are looking for a Google Reader replacement, you check off the "Google Reader import" box to kick off the automatic import. To do so, you have to enter your Google credentials on the second screen of the registration process to let CommaFeed handle the import. If the idea of giving your login credentials to a random Website skeeves you out (as it does for me) you leave the box unchecked and just do the manual import later. Giving the user a choice wins CommaFeed good karma points.

Here is bonus karma: You can poke around the almost-full-featured demo to try it out before signing up. I am so tired of having to register an account just to try out a service.

CommaFeed's interface looks really similar to the classic Google Reader, and many of the keyboard shortcuts are the same. The team has promised to add the remaining shortcuts soon. You can also use the built-in sharing options to share posts on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or Instapaper. Themes are coming, and if you know a little CSS or HTML, you can modify the look and feel anyway you like.

You can also filter the screen to view just the unread items, mark everything in a feed as read, or sort items by date. The search engine lets you find related posts. It was one of my favorite things about Google Reader and I am thrilled CommaFeed included it.

You can toggle between the option to see only headlines, or headline plus a summary underneath. Google Reader lets me see the first few words of the story in headline view; CommaFeed doesn't. Headline view really is just the headline. I kind of miss it, but it's a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things.

Subscribing to a new feed is as simple as clicking the Subscribe button and pasting a feed URL. Removing it is just a matter of selecting the feed on the left sidebar and clicking on the wrench icon. This brings up the feed details page, and you just hit "Unsubscribe." You can change feed details, such as renaming it, changing the category, and changing the order it shows up in the list of feeds.

There isn't any mobile support, which is a bit of a disappointment. It's not a deal-breaker for me since I generally read via my Web browser, even on my mobile devices, but I know a lot of people prefer using native apps. If you are one of them, look at Feedly?or check out the iOS app for Digg Reader.

The site's popularity has surged in the past few days, which has impacted performance. Even so, it hasn't felt particularly sluggish or difficult to use. In fact, I am feeling forgiving because it's clear the team is actually trying to address the performance issues and improve the service with the influx of new users.

I like CommaFeed, and it is almost as good as Editors' Choice?G2Reader, but what really gets me excited is its build-your-own-reader capabilities. I originally tried Tiny Tiny RSS (a PHP application) and was frustrated at how sluggish the application was, so I was nervous about trying CommaFeed (a Java server application). I needn't have worried, because CommaFeed was quite easy to install and I had no performance issues.

CommaFeed is much more flexible, as it can be installed on either Windows or Linux (provided you install a Web server such as Tomcat). I also liked the fact that the GitHub repository had instructions on how to throw up CommaFeed onto RedHat's OpenShift cloud platform (which uses JBoss). I also liked the fact that CommaFeed can be installed on either Windows or Linux. The instructions are thorough for an open source project, but a little opaque to anyone new to server management or building code. Keep Google handy for assistance.

If you want to try OpenShift, the GitHub README file links to a detailed and well-done "alternate" instruction manual that really smoothes out all the bumps in the process.

Overall, CommaFeed is one of the best alternatives to Google Reader that I've ever used, and I am right now trying to decide if I am going to stick with the Web-based version, the version on my server, or OpenShift. It's a great dilemma to have, really. The interface and usability is on par with The Old Reader, but the platform has a little bit more growing up to do before it can completely take on our Editors' Choice G2Reader. But if you want to host your own RSS Reader, you can't go wrong with CommaFeed.
