Epigenetic biomarkers may predict if a specific diet and exercise regimen will work
May 30, 2013 ? Would you be more likely to try a diet and exercise regimen if you knew in advance if it would actually help you lose weight? Thanks to a new report published in the June 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, this could become a reality. In the report, scientists identify five epigenetic biomarkers in adolescents that were associated with a better weight loss at the beginning of a weight loss program. Not only could this could ultimately help predict an individual's response to weight loss intervention, but it may offer therapeutic targets for enhancing a weight loss program's effects.
"Successful obesity treatment during adolescence could reduce morbidity at later stages of life and lead to a better quality of life," said Amelia Mart?, Ph.D., Pharm. D., co-author of this study from the Department of Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. "It is crucial to find new markers for obesity treatment. Here, we describe five putative epigenetic biomarkers that could help to predict the response to a weight loss intervention in obese adolescents."
To make this discovery, Mart? and colleagues first performed a global methylation assay in 24 adolescents who had the best and worst response to the EVASYON weight loss program, and then expanded the sample to include 83 more adolescents. Researchers measured an epigenetic marker, DNA methylation levels, in obese adolescents from a blood sample at baseline and again at the end of the 10-week program. Participants were then divided into two groups (high and low responders) according to the weight loss achieved. The researchers found that the baseline DNA methylation levels of five epigenetic markers were associated with better weight loss response. This EVASYON program is a lifestyle and nutritional educational weight loss program that includes a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and pediatricians. EVASYON was conducted in five Spanish cities: Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza.
"If you've ever wondered why some people seem to do so well on a diet and exercise plan and other fail so miserably, then now we know that the way that genes express themselves (via epigenetics) plays an important role," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This report moves us a step closer when we will be able to prescribe a weight loss program tailored to more than just the lifestyle and conditioning level of the patient, but also to his or her particular genetic and epigenetic profile."

NATO service member killed in Afghanistan
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan has killed a NATO service member, the coalition said.
The U.S.-led military coalition says the service member died Sunday as a result of insurgent fire. It did not provide any other details.
The death brings the number of international force members killed this month in Afghanistan to 20.
May has been the deadliest month this year for international troops in Afghanistan, but casualties are down over previous years as foreign forces pull back and allow Afghan security forces to take the lead before the coalition run by NATO ends its mission next year.
Last May, a total of 44 NATO troops died in Afghanistan.
The coalition also said a car bomb hit a NATO convoy early Monday in the country's west, but there were no military casualties.
Three Afghan civilians were wounded in the blast that hit the convoy in Farah province, said Deputy Governor Mohammad Rasouli.

Search ongoing for passenger of NY plane crash
EPHRATAH, N.Y. (AP) ? The search for a brain cancer patient who was on the volunteer medical flight that crashed in a wooded area of central New York will stretch into a third day Monday.
Frank and Evelyn Amerosa of Utica, N.Y., were aboard an Angel Flight on Friday night when the twin-engine aircraft went down in Ephratah, a sleepy town about an hour west of Albany, according to police and family members.
Officials and family said John Campbell, 70, of Stamford, Conn., was flying the couple back from the Boston area, where Frank Amerosa was being treated for brain cancer.
The bodies of Campbell and Evelyn Amerosa have been recovered from the rural crash site. Dozens of searchers, including a helicopter crew, continued searching the woods and water Sunday for 64-year-old Frank Amerosa, who was presumed dead, said Sgt. Brian Van Nostrand of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department.
Frank Amerosa, a retired trucker, had been diagnosed with brain cancer more than a year ago. Evelyn Amerosa, 58, worked at an area nursing home directing residents in activities like bingo and trips ? a job she loved, said her daughter Heather Theobald. She said her mother had been with her step-father for at least 16 years. The couple loved to travel and had recently returned from the Bahamas.
"Very happy, very much love, very optimistic, they did everything for anybody," Theobald told The Associated Press. "They were just very good people. They were loved by a lot of people."
Campbell was a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for the sick. Angel Flight Northeast said it has set up free air transportation and medical care for more than 65,000 children and adults on about 60,000 flights covering more than 12 million miles. It was founded in 1996.
"John loved to fly and truly believed in the mission of Angel Flight. He loved volunteering his time and we take some solace in the fact he died doing something he loved while trying to help others," according to a family statement read to the AP by his daughter Kimberly Conti, of Rutherford, N.J.
Rescue workers on Sunday scoured the woods and searched a big, murky pond where the bulk of the aircraft was submerged. Wreckage from the crash was dispersed over a large area, with pieces of the plane found as far as five miles away.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators who returned to the crash site Sunday aim to retrieve the bulk of the wreckage from the water over the next few days, said agency spokesman Eric Weiss. They are looking for smartphones, GPS devices, computer tablets or other items that could "give the investigators some electronic evidence of what happened in the last minutes of flight," he said.
The Piper PA 34 had departed from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., and was headed to Rome, N.Y., before it crashed just after 5 p.m. Friday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. The plane did not issue a distress call before losing radar and radio contact, the NTSB said.
Terence Kindlon, an Albany attorney who is a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, said he and another lawyer, Dale Thuillez, had flown the couple to Boston on Friday morning in Thuillez's plane. He quickly found out he had something in common with Frank Amerosa.
"We were both former Marines and had been in Vietnam pretty close together in time," Kindlon said. "We hit it right off. He was a nice guy."
The two lawyers flew back to Albany in Thuillez's plane after dropping off the couple in Boston.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Kindlon stressed that "the standards for being an Angel Flight pilot are rigorous."
Authorities had initially said the bodies of two passengers were found after the aircraft went down Friday night. But Van Nostrand corrected that report Sunday, saying the bodies of the Evelyn Amerosa and Campbell had been found.
Witnesses described the destruction that started in the air above Ephratah.
Joan Dudley, owner of Granny's Ice Cream Shanty, which is less than a mile from the crash site, said she and her employees saw the plane flip, then fall apart Friday night.
"Parts and pieces of it were flying through the sky, and a body fell out," Dudley said.
They called 911 as they parked their car and ran to the crash site in the rain to see if they could rescue anyone.
"Airplane parts were all over the place," she said. "They were picking them up all over."
Ephratah resident Roger Berry, 75, said he was outside chopping wood when the plane crashed.
"When I heard it, I knew something was wrong," Berry said.
Berry said he heard a bang, then saw pieces of the plane fall from the sky. The motor fell 50 feet from his neighbor's bedroom, where she was sleeping, Berry said.

Temp bridges planned for fallen Wash. span
SEATTLE (AP) ? Plans are underway to construct a pair of temporary steel bridges across the Skagit River in northern Washington state where a highway span collapsed into the water this past week.
The Associated Press has learned from an official who spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement that the bridges will go up next to the original span and will allow limited travel over Interstate 5.
Planners hope to have the temporary structures in place within three weeks. Repair work would then begin on the damaged bridge, with a goal of finishing that work by fall.
The federal government is expected to cover 90 percent of the cost of the temporary bridge and the replacement.
On Thursday, a semi-truck carrying an oversize load clipped a steel truss, starting the collapse of the span and sending cars and people into the cold river waters, authorities said. The three people in the cars survived with non-life threatening injuries.
But the collapse cut access to one the most important highways in Washington state for trade, commuters and travelers.
Meanwhile on Saturday, barges arrived at the river with equipment ready to remove the mangled steel, pavement and cars in the water.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Debbie Hersman on Sunday said the bridge had withstood other over height collisions with vehicles in the past, with the most recent reported collision happening last October. She said evidence of other collisions can be seen in the spans still standing over the water.
Hersman also said a second truck with a similar cargo was traveling behind the truck involved in the collision. She said investigators are inspecting that cargo and truck to take measurements. The truck involved in the collision has also been moved off the highway on-ramp where it has been parked since Thursday.
Hersman also said investigators have traveled to Alberta, Canada to inspect the trucking company's records.
The NTSB head also said that if the truck had been on the left lane of the southbound lanes, it likely would have cleared the bridge without a collision, but added that more precise measurements need to be taken. The bridge's height clearance varies across it.
"We know the company was required to establish that they could clear the entire route," Hersman said.
The truck's cargo from Canada was headed to Alaska. Its plan was to load its cargo onto a barge in Vancouver, Wash., about 275 miles south of the border crossing.

Obama to nation: Don't take US troops for granted
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) ? Reflecting on the personal toll of war, President Barack Obama on Monday implored a nation in which few volunteer for the armed forces to "always remember and to be worthy of the sacrifice" of its fallen heroes.
Addressing a Memorial Day service at Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said he worries that U.S. servicemen and women ? including thousands he sent to war in more than four years as commander in chief ? aren't being fully appreciated in an era in which "most Americans are not directly touched by war."
Less than 1 percent of the population of more than 313 million people serves in the military, officials have said.
Obama said he couldn't explain why few are touched by war, but he allowed that it could be because of the bravery and skill of the all-volunteer force, along with new technologies that make it possible to carry out missions while endangering fewer personnel. Contrast that with generations past, when Obama said millions of Americans contributed during World War II, including his grandparents, and when "just about everybody knew somebody" who served in the Vietnam War.
"As a consequence, not all Americans may always see or fully grasp the depth of sacrifice, the profound costs that are made in our name ? right now, as we speak, every day," Obama said.
He cited fears of loved ones being forgotten that he said were expressed in letters he had received from a Naval reservist recently returned from Afghanistan and from a Charlotte, N.C., woman whose two sons are Marines who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama noted that his address here last year was the first time in nine years that Americans were no longer fighting and dying in Iraq, where the war has ended. The U.S. also is ending its mission in Afghanistan, with most of the more than 60,000 troops stationed there due to come home by the end of next year.
"But even as we turn the page on a decade of conflict," Obama said, "our nation is still at war."
He urged Americans, as they go about their daily lives, to remember that their fellow countrymen are still serving, still fighting and still putting their lives on the line every day.
"Let it be our task, every single one of us, to honor the strength and the resolve and the love these brave Americans felt for each other and for our country," the president said. "Let us never forget to always remember and to be worthy of the sacrifice they make in our name."
Obama spoke at the nation's hallowed burial ground four days after declaring in a major national security address that the U.S. has taken down the al-Qaida terrorist organization, particularly after the killing of its leader, Osama bin Laden. But terrorist threats remain, he said, cautioning the U.S. against letting its vigilance slide.
The president spoke at the amphitheater of Arlington National Cemetery on a sun-splashed morning after he placed a wreath of red, white and blue flowers at the Tomb of the Unknowns and observed a moment of silence.
In the speech, Obama reflected on the human toll of armed conflict, noting that "every loss is devastating" for the parents who lose a child, the husbands and wives who lose a partner and the children who lose a parent.
As the one who has final say on whether to send troops into combat, Obama said he feels the losses, too.
"I feel it every time I meet a wounded warrior, every time I visit Walter Reed and every time I grieve with a Gold Star family," he said, referring to families whose loved ones were killed during military service.
He last visited wounded troops at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., in March.
Before returning to the White House, Obama stopped at the cemetery's Section 60, the final resting place for U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, including two whose stories the president shared in his remarks.
He and first lady Michelle Obama spent more than a half hour there, walking among the white headstones and greeting and taking pictures with many of those who were at the cemetery to pay their respects.
Before departing the White House, the president and first lady held a private breakfast in the State Dining Room for Gold Star families.

In China, U.S. official promotes military ties
BEIJING (AP) ? U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon pushed Tuesday for stronger military relations with China, on the final day of a visit to Beijing to set the stage for a summit next month between President Barack Obama and China's Xi Jinping.
Nontraditional military activities such as peacekeeping, disaster relief and anti-piracy operations offer opportunities to boost cooperation and "contribute to greater mutual confidence and understanding," Donilon told Gen. Fan Changlong, a vice chairman of the commission overseeing China's armed forces.
A "healthy, stable, and reliable military-to-military relationship" is an essential part of overall China-U.S. ties, Donilon said at the start of the meeting at China's hulking Defense Ministry building in central Beijing.
Donilon met with a range of Chinese officials over two days to hammer out plans for the June 7-8 summit, the first face-to-face meeting between the presidents since Obama's re-election and Xi's promotion to Communist Party chief last November.
Their informal summit at the private Sunnylands estate of the late publishing tycoon Walter Annenberg in southern California will come months before the two leaders had been originally scheduled to meet, underscoring concerns that the U.S-China relationship was drifting.
Xi told Donilon on Monday that relations were at a critical juncture, and that the sides must now "build on past successes and open up new dimensions for the future."
Building trust between their militaries is one of the main challenges the sides face in seeking to stop a drift in relations, troubled by issues from trade disputes to allegations of Chinese cyberspying.
Although Washington and Beijing have talked about boosting military cooperation for more than a decade, distrust runs high and disagreements over Taiwan, North Korea and China's assertive claims to disputed territories in the East and South China seas remain potential flashpoints.
The U.S. has repeatedly questioned the purpose of China's heavy military buildup over the past two decades, while Beijing is deeply suspicious of Washington's new focus on military alliances in Asia and plans to redeploy more weaponry and troops to the Asia-Pacific region.
Steps to increase benign interactions between their militaries have been modest so far, including joint anti-piracy drills in the Gulf of Aden and a classroom natural disaster response simulation. The U.S. has also invited China to take part in large U.S.-led multinational naval exercises, though China has not said if it would participate.
Apart from purely military issues, distrust has deepened as the U.S. feels its world leadership challenged and China, its power growing, demands greater deference to its interests and a larger say over global rule-setting. Chinese officials and state media regularly say Washington is thwarting China's rise by hemming Beijing in through its Asian alliances and discouraging Chinese investment in the U.S. on grounds of national security.

A vaccine to protect sheep and cattle from a virus spread by midges has been approved by government vets.
The virus, which emerged in the Netherlands and Germany in 2011, can lead to sheep and cattle having stillborn or deformed offspring.
The disease has spread to every county in England and Wales, and was recently reported in Scotland.
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) causes fever, diarrhoea and loss of milk production in adult cattle.
The first SBV vaccine, developed by the animal health company Merck MSD, is expected to be available to UK farmers in the summer.

NFU livestock board chairman and sheep farmer, Charles Sercombe, lost 40% of his early lambing flock to the virus.
He said the vaccine would give added reassurance to farmers who were concerned about losing lambs to the disease.
"Everybody in farming who wants to use it will welcome it as soon as possible," he told BBC News.
"Some flocks need it in the next few weeks to fit in with their breeding programmes."
Reports from farmers suggest that at least 1,700 farms throughout the UK have now tested positive for the SBV virus.
UK farmers will be the first in the EU with access to the vaccine, according to Defra.
Phil Stocker, chief executive of the National Sheep Association, said farmers should speak to their vet about the timing of vaccination.
"The decision about whether to vaccinate or not will be down to each individual farmer, their business model, infection history, lambing pattern and location," he said.

On Tumblr, there is the dashboard, which is like Facebook's News Feed or inbox. Today, Tumblr does some advertising there. Yahoo would like to "introduce a very light ad load" there.? Mayer says the ad units will be native and follow the form and function of Tumblr.
Advertisers are already salivating at the thought of getting more exposure in front of Tumblr's massive audience. Ad Age noted:

"What makes Tumblr such an attractive acquisition is it has so much credibility among this audience that Yahoo and others are seeking -- this 18-to-24 sweet spot," said Ming Linsley, MEC's senior director of social media. "The concern everyone has is whether or not Tumblr will lose its credibility if it's acquired by Yahoo."
Tumblr sales chief Lee Brown already said last year that's working with advertisers who want reach and frequency ? mass exposure, in plain English ? on Tumblr. "[Some buyers] just want to buy units for reach and frequency. I?m working through that with them now," he told Adweek.
We noted earlier that Tumbr has made half a dozen significant moves ? including adding mobile ads ? in recent months to make itself attractive to advertisers, and the company believes it will be profitable soon. It had only $13 million in revenue last year.
And then, of course, there is Wall Street. This is a big acquisition for Yahoo. Shareholders will want to see a return on the investment. There will be intense pressure on Mayer and Karp to deliver those numbers. As Zachary Reiss-Davis, an analyst at Forrester Research, told Bloomberg:
?They have to balance keeping those users actively using Tumblr, while at the same time adding advertising and putting monetization around it,? he said. ?Those are very difficult tasks to balance against each other.?
Difficult tasks, indeed. But note that everyone ? Karp's new boss, Karps' sales chief, advertisers, and Wall Street ? are all agreed on the same thing.
There will be a lot more advertising on Tumblr.

Far-reaching, microvascular damage found in uninjured side of brain after stroke
May 20, 2013 ? While the effects of acute stroke have been widely studied, brain damage during the subacute phase of stroke has been a neglected area of research. Now, a new study by the University of South Florida reports that within a week of a stroke caused by a blood clot in one side of the brain, the opposite side of the brain shows signs of microvascular injury.
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and increases the risk for dementia.
"Approximately 80 percent of strokes are ischemic strokes, in which the blood supply to the brain is restricted, causing a shortage of oxygen," said study lead author Svitlana Garbuzova-Davis, PhD, associate professor in the USF Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair. "Minutes after ischemic stroke, there are serious effects within the brain at both the molecular and cellular levels. One understudied aspect has been the effect of ischemic stroke on the competence of the blood-brain barrier and subsequent related events in remote brain areas."
Using a rat model, researchers at USF Health investigated the subacute phase of ischemic stroke and found deficits in the microvascular integrity in the brain hemisphere opposite to where the initial stroke injury occured.
The study was published in the May 10, 2013 issue of PLOS One.
The USF team found that "diachisis," a term used to describe certain brain deficits remote from primary insult, can occur during the subacute phase of ischemic stroke. The research discovered diachisis is closely related to a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, which separates circulating blood from brain tissue.
In the subacute phase of an ischemic stroke, when the stroke-induced disturbances in the brain occur in remote brain microvessels, several areas of the brain are affected by a variety of injuries, including neuronal swelling and diminished myelin in brain structures. The researchers suggest that recognizing the significance of microvascular damage could make the blood-brain barrier (BBB) a therapeutic "target" for future neuroprotective strategies for stroke patients.
The mechanisms of BBB permeability at different phases of stroke are poorly understood. While there have been investigations of BBB integrity and processes in ischemic stroke, the researchers said, most examinations have been limited to the phase immediately after stroke, known as acute stroke. Their interest was in determining microvascular integrity in the brain hemisphere opposite to an initial stroke injury at the subacute phase.
Accordingly, this study using rats with surgically-simulated strokes was designed to investigate the effect of ischemic stroke on the BBB in the subacute phase, and the effects of a compromised BBB upon various brain regions, some distant from the stroke site.
"The aim of this study was to characterize subacute diachisis in rats modeled with ischemic stroke," said co-author Cesar Borlongan, PhD, professor and vice chairman for research in the Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair and director of the USF Center for Aging and Brain Repair. "Our specific focus was on analyzing the condition of the BBB and the processes in the areas of the brain not directly affected by ischemia. BBB competence in subacute diachisis is uncertain and needed to be studied."
Their findings suggest that damage to the BBB, and subsequent vascular leakage as the BBB becomes more permeable, plays a major role in subacute diachisis.
The increasing BBB permeability hours after the simulated stroke, and finding that the BBB "remained open" seven days post-stroke, were significant findings, said Dr. Garbuzova-Davis, who is also a researcher in USF Center for Aging and Brain Repair. "Since increased BBB permeability is often associated with brain swelling, BBB leakage may be a serious and life-threatening complication of ischemic stroke."
Another significant aspect was the finding that autophagy -- a mechanism involving cell degradation of unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular components --plays a role in the subacute phase of ischemia. Study results showed that accumulation of numerous autophagosomes within endothelial cells in microvessels of both initially damaged and non-injured brain areas might be closely associated with BBB damage.
Autophagy is a complex but normal process usually aimed at "self-removing" damaged cell components to promote cell survival. It was unclear, however, whether the role of autophagy in subacute post-ischemia was promoting cell survival or cell death.
More than 30 percent of patients who survive strokes develop dementia within two years, the researchers noted.
"Although dementia is complex, vascular damage in post-stroke patients is a significant risk factor, depending on the severity, volume and site of the stroke," said study co-author Dr. Paul Sanberg, USF senior vice president for research and innovation. "Ischemic stroke might initiate neurodegenerative dementia, particularly in the aging population."
The researchers conclude that repair of the BBB following ischemic stroke could potentially prevent further degradation of surviving neurons.
"Recognizing that the BBB is a therapeutic target is important for developing neuroprotective strategies," they said.

Cairo airport baggage handlers end strike
CAIRO (AP) ? Cairo airport officials say baggage handlers have resumed work after a strike that left passengers on 20 international flights from Europe and Arab countries waiting several hours for luggage.
Baggage handlers went on strike Saturday afternoon to demand stronger safety measures after a colleague died when a conveyer belt used to unload luggage fell on his head.
His EgyptAir co-workers say it took more than an hour for the ambulance to arrive at the scene from the airport's onsite hospital. Hospital officials deny this, and say the ambulance arrived within 10 minutes.
EgyptAir official Alaa el-Shahawy, who is responsible for ground logistics at Cairo airport, submitted his resignation Sunday. Airport officials say he will remain in the job until an investigation is complete.
Officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

Pope and Merkel, mindful of Christian vote, discuss a Europe focused on values, assistance
VATICAN CITY - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, mindful of the weight of Christian voters in September elections, made a quick trip to Rome Saturday for a private meeting with Pope Francis, focusing on how Europe's struggling economy should be at the service of the people.

Asked whether they had also talked about the pope's recent criticism, Merkel said that they spoke about the regulation of the financial markets.
"The regulation of the financial markets is our central problem, our central task," said Merkel, who met with reporters on the Vatican grounds. "We are moving ahead, but we are not yet where we want to be, where we could say that a derailment of the guard rails of social market won't happen again."
Merkel added: "It ought to be like this: the economy is there to serve the people. In the last few years, this hasn't been the case at all everywhere."
Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal and especially Greece, have seen governments concentrate on debt reduction while slashing state spending. With growth stymied, unemployment, especially among young people, has soared. Businesses, many of them family-run in southern Europe, have failed as bank lending dried up.
The chancellor also said the pope had stressed that the world needs a strong and just Europe and described the overall conversation has encouraging.
Merkel is currently campaigning for re-election in September's general elections. Half of Germany's population is Catholic. In Bavaria especially, there is a strong conservative and Catholic tradition.
According to a Vatican statement, Francis and Merkel concentrated on topics of "common interest, including the socio-political, economic and religious situation in Europe and in the world."
"In particular, they spoke about safeguarding human rights, about the persecutions faced by Christians, about religious freedom and of international collaboration to promote peace," the Vatican said.
Francis, who is Argentine, has picked up on campaigns by the two previous popes, the Polish John Paul II and German Benedict XVI, to reinvigorate what the Catholic church sees as flagging religious enthusiasm on a continent with Christian roots, including dwindling number of churchgoers in much of Western Europe.
The Vatican also uses papal visits with major leaders to seek allies in its lobbying on behalf of Christians who face discrimination and in some cases physical violence in parts of the world.
Merkel told reporters she had reflected during her flight to Rome earlier in the day how both she and Francis has spent part of their lives in countries once under dictatorships -- her native East Germany under Soviet-influenced communist rule, and the pope's Argentine homeland, which had formerly been ruled by a bloody military dictatorship.
Francis and Merkel also exchanged views on Europe, which the Vatican described as a "community of values" with responsibilities in the world, "urging commitment by all secular and religious components toward favouring development based on the dignity of the human person and inspired by the principles of assistance and solidarity."
There was no immediate indication if Francis would visit Germany, which Merkel said she invited him to visit.
She left him with gifts including a boxed set of 107 CDs of classical music directed by German maestro Wilhelm Furtwaengler. "I don't know if you will have time to listen" to them all, Merkel told him in German. Francis also seemed pleased by the other gift, three volumes of poetry by Friedrich Hoelderlin, a poet he is known to enjoy.

A foreclosure auction for more than 5,800 acres of Kau land is scheduled to be held at noon on May 21, 2013 at the First Circuit Court Building in Honolulu.? The land includes pastures, coffee farms, coastal land, as well as several homes and lots.? The county appraised the value at $13.6 million and the remaining mortgage is $59.7 million.? They had planned to subdivide the land into 20 acre lots, build infrastructure such as roads, and acquire permits to construct high-end homes on farm land.? In order to develop the land Windwalker Hawaii borrowed $44.7 million from Lehman Brothers Holdings against the property.
In 2008 Lehman Brothers filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (the largest bankruptcy in US history) and stopped funding the loan.? Without the required monies Worden and his development group were unable to continue developing the project or even pay many contractors who had already done a fair amount of work for them.

Worden?s group filed a motion with the US Bankruptcy Court in New York asking permission to seek an alternative form of funding.? The motion stated, ?Lehman?s failure to fund the project?s operating costs has thus severely disrupted the project?s ability to obtain necessary permits and has been so devastating that the Hawaii borrowers? damages may exceed the amount borrowed.?
After six years of struggling the project has finally come to a halt and the Kau land will be auctioned off.? Chris Manfredi of Windwalker Hawaii said, ?I was here before Lehman, and I will be here after? The community has treated me as `ohana, and I will continue to do all I can to continue to advance our community through agriculture.?

Luma Camera - Rene Ritchie
While I was at BlackBerry Live -- or was it iMore live? -- one of the developers in attendance came over and showed me Luma Camera for iPhone. It's a video shooting app that offers filters both real-time and for post-processing, as well as optional HD video storage space via their website. The most interesting feature, however, is the image stabilization. Real optical image stabilization requires hardware, but Luma does a respectable job using the iPhones built in sensors and it's powerful graphics processing capabilities.
I haven't had much of a chance to play around with it yet, but it looks like fun. If you try it, let me know what you think!

Ticket to Ride Online - Richard Devine
I must confess to being an avid fan of the Geek and Sundry YouTube Show, TableTop starring Wil Wheaton. It's via that show I first became aware of the board game Ticket to Ride, and now I've found and begun playing the Mac version -- Ticket to Ride Online
I've never played the board game, but the Mac version is a beautifully colourful recreation of the original, and follows the rules to the letter. You choose a series of routes, and the objective is to lay trains on as many of those routes as possible before the game is up. The longest routes get an extra reward at the end, and incomplete routes loses points. It's really simple to pick up and play, and there's a comprehensive tutorial game to help you get to grips with the gameplay.
In-App purchases are available to extend the game boards, with new ones available for Europe, another USA board and for Switzerland. And, the online play supports competing against other Mac, PC, and iPad players. I've not tried out the iPad version just yet, but you'll find a link for that too below.

Tweetbot for Mac - Ally Kazmucha
There are a wealth of amazing Twitter clients for iOS but when it comes to Mac, there are less to choose from. While I tend to use Twitterrific on my iPhone and iPad, I've never really liked the feel of it on Mac. Tweetbot is my second favorite for iOS and when they released a Mac client a while back, it definitely didn't disappoint.
The price point is quite a bit higher than other Twitter offerings in the Mac App Store but honestly, it's the best available, hands down. If you want the iOS Tweetbot experience on your Mac, there really is no other option.

Saudi vegetable seller dies from self-immolation
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? A Saudi newspaper says a vegetable seller who set himself on fire in Riyadh after police confiscated his goods for standing in an unauthorized area has died.
The website for newspaper Sada reported that the man, identified only by the family name of Sureihi, died in hospital late on Friday.
The self-immolation emulated that of a street vendor in Tunisia, whose 2011 death sparked the Arab Spring uprisings.
Family members were seen outside the hospital Saturday demanding answers about why police confiscated the man's goods. Witnesses say the family wants to know what led him to douse himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze on Thursday.
Saudi officials refused to comment. They did not disclose the man's name or age.
Despite Saudi Arabia's oil wealth, many of its people live in poor conditions. Protests in the conservative kingdom are rare.

Verizon increasing data allowances on prepaid plans
New plans available to existing customers now; new customers can take advantage June 6
As an update to a previous blog post detailing changes to its prepaid plans, Verizon stealthily made yet another change that will give prepaid customers even more data. Verizon keeps things simple on its prepaid smartphone offerings, with two tiers -- $60 and $70. Both have unlimited talk and text, and previously either 500MB or 2GB of data. Verizon is now bumping those up to 2GB and 4GB, respectively, with no price increase. The plan changes go into effect right away for existing customers that have either of the two plans, but new customers will have to wait until June 6th to have the option available when starting a line.
If you're new to Verizon's prepaid plans, you have to also remember that they are restricted to just its 3G service, and there's no indication of when (if ever) LTE will be included. With that being said, these are still a couple of good options that just got a little more competitive in the steadily expanding prepaid market.
